It's been a tremendous year for Eastside sophomore athlete Eric Stokes. Just in his second year in high school and Stokes earned the starting running back position at the beginning of the football season, he was ranked second in the 400m heading into state, he's been offered by Georgia State and now he's a state champion.
EHS senior soccer players Tyrik Francis and Haley Walden have been selected to play in the DiVarsity.com's 2015 Georgia High School Association All-Star Soccer game in Marietta on Sunday, May 17th at Sprayberry High School. Both played in last year's all-star game proudly representing Eastside High School. They will head to Sprayberry High School to compete against the best soccer players from all classifications in the state of Georgia. With a combined score of 290 Eastside girls' golf placed third at sectionals a little over one week ago, just seven strokes behind second place. The Lady Eagles will now try for a state championship on Monday when they travel to Applewood Golf Course in Keysville.
Last week, Eastside traveled down to Wayne County where they, as No. 4 seed, upset the No. 1 seeded Yellow Jackets 4-1 pitting them against Whitewater in the second round, which took place in Fayetteville on Wednesday. A five hour trip down to Wayne County – the No. 1 seed Eastside's boys soccer (10-6) was set to play – turned into a first round upset for the Eagles, pitting them against Whitewater (12-2-1), one of the best teams in the state (ranked fourth in Class AAAA by maxpreps.com).
Last year around this time Eastside baseball was 14-12 (9-7 in region play) sitting at home while other teams were in the playoffs. Rockdale County edged Newton out in three of the five All-Star events on Wednesday evening, as the Rockdale girl All-Stars won their game while representatives of Salem (Shay Tarver) and Heritage (Rashad Jones) won the girls and boys three-point contests respectively. Eastside completed a sweep of Spalding in a doubleheader at home on Thursday to give the Eagles a shot at obtaining a No. 3 seed in the state playoffs at minimum. With the weirdly constructed way Eastside's region is set up, despite going 15-3 in Region 4-AAAA, the Eagles will likely be the No. 4 seed forcing them to travel to play Wayne County in the first round of the state playoffs.
