Hoffman praises new Oakland Raider, Wilkins

Newly signed Oakland Raider Gary Wilkins is attempting to make the team as NFL rookie mini-camps begin around the nation. Wilkins, went from Furman to the Raiders after being signed as an undrafted free agent, but his story started in Covington when Wilkins played for Alcovy under head football coach Kirk Hoffman. The Covington News spoke with Hoffman and asked about Wilkins as a player and a person in this exclusive Q&A.

With most of the teams/schools off this week with Spring Break, here's a look at which teams have been the best with just a couple of weeks left in the season. The baseball playoffs are coming, but there are still some important region battles to take place some big games left to determine final playoff seeding. Alcovy girls/boys clinch season series over Newton

With the Alcovy girls (9-3, 6-2 Region 2-AAAAAA) and boys (4-1-7, 4-4 Rergion 2-AAAAAA) soccer teams both coming off victories against Newton 9-3, 6-2 Region 2-AAAAAA on Wednesday, one more win would seal the deal for the regular season series and that's what they got as the Lady Tigers blanked Newton 5-0 and the boys came back to win 2-1.

Carlvon honored; Alcovy sweeps Newton

Alcovy, Eastside and Newton's soccer teams all came together Wednesday evening at Sharp Stadium to honor the memory of Carlvon Betts, who passed away two weeks ago in a car accident. Between the boys and girls' games, Newton Athletic Director Tracey Curtis presented Carlvon's parents – Carlton and Tracy Betts – with a package that featured some of Betts's best photos and NHS principal, John Ellenberg, announced that the school would be retiring Betts's jersey.

Austin signs with Truett McConnell

There's always that one moment or season where the parents of a high school athlete realize their child has the ability to use his or her athletic abilities to get a scholarship to attend college. John Richardson and Holly Johnson, the parents of Alcovy wrestler Austin Richardson, saw that moment come to fruition on Tuesday when Richardson signed his letter of intent to attend Truett McConnell.

Lady Rams/Lady Tigers ousted in playoffs

After coming so close to winning the Region 2-AAAAAA championship, the No. 2 seed Newton Lady Rams hosted the Lady Packers of Colquitt in the first round of the state tournament on Wednesday evening. Newton definitely did not come out with the same energy they had in the region championship, but they did have late push to be in the position to with the game. Ultimately, Newton came up short and was defeated 46-42.
