Alcovy basketball rebooting

Alcovy basketball, girls and boys, will look almost entirely different from last year. Both teams are young and the boys have a new coach in Mack Hardwick. The girls lost six seniors and will have 10 players returning to play varsity but only one - the great Tierra Hodges - with real varsity experience.

Alcovy to host Black & Gold game

Alcovy basketball, both girls and boys, will host a scrimmage Friday evening beginning at 6 p.m. with a girls game and 7 p.m. for the boys game. Price of admission is $5, but it's free for Livingston Elementary students and Tiny Tigers basketball camp attendees.

Hardwick to bring community back to Alcovy

After a winless season last year, Alcovy boys basketball has a familiar face leading a new regime to change the culture in Tiger country. Mack Hardwick, who served as an assistant last year under one-and-done head coach Duane Kelley, will begin his first year as a head coach in the Fall.

Hawkins and Beshears win D-ll National Championship

Morgan Beshears and Amanda Hawkins, two softball players from somewhat rival schools in Alcovy and Eastside respectively, put their efforts together to help lift the University of North Georgia to a Division-ll National Championship, the first in North Georgia school history.

Hoffman praises new Oakland Raider, Wilkins

Newly signed Oakland Raider Gary Wilkins is attempting to make the team as NFL rookie mini-camps begin around the nation. Wilkins, went from Furman to the Raiders after being signed as an undrafted free agent, but his story started in Covington when Wilkins played for Alcovy under head football coach Kirk Hoffman. The Covington News spoke with Hoffman and asked about Wilkins as a player and a person in this exclusive Q&A.

Wimbush signs to play basketball at Truett-McConnell

Ayanna Wimbush sat down in front of the Alcovy mascot on Friday afternoon to sign her letter of intent to play basketball at Truett-McConnell College with her family next to her and her friends watching she put the pen to the paper and solidified her collegiate career in basketball.

Kelley running to Methodist

One of Alcovy's best offensive weapons from last year is moving on to college. Tiger running back Kenyon Kelley will be playing football at Methodist College after signing his letter of intent on Tuesday afternoon.

Tigers rolls past Newton

In what was likely a preview of the region championship, Alcovy (15-3-1, 8-0 Region 2-AAAAAA) traveled to Newton (9-14, 5-2 Region 2-AAAAAA) in a battle for sole posession of first place in the region. For the second time this season, Alcovy capitalized off Newton's mistakes to take a big lead and never look back, defeating them 7-0.

Alcovy remains undefeated in region

In softball and baseball in the box score 'K' stands for strikeout, in the Alcovy vs. Rockdale game it stood for Kalia Johnson. Standing strong at 13-2, and an undefeated 7-0 in region play, the Alcovy softball team showed no mercy against Rockdale (4-11, 1-5 Region 2-AAAAAA) run-ruling them 9-0 after five innings as Johnson threw seven K's.

Kalia Johnson: Alcovy athlete of the week

Alcovy pitcher Kalia Johnson is the Covington News' Alcovy athlete of the week for the week of Sept. 1. Johnson was a huge factor in the Tigers' 17-0 blowout win over Tucker. Johnson could've picked up another win last week if the Tigers had played just one more inning against Eastside. The game got cancelled due to bad weather with the Tigers leading by a few runs.

Tigers capitalize off errors, top Newton

In high school softball when you're dealing with young players who are still learning, there will be some mistakes. Most games come down to the team that makes the fewest mistakes and on Tuesday that was Alcovy, as they eased to a 9-1 win over a young Newton team.

Tigers fall to 0-2

It was all déjà vu for the Alcovy Tigers (0-2) on Friday night as they took on the Baldwin Braves from Milledgeville, Georgia. In back-to-back weeks, they gave up 30 points on defense, but this time they weren't able to get on the scoreboard, as the Braves torched Alcovy 30-0.
