Rams, Tigers face off in rematch

f you like good basketball, you won't want to miss tomorrow's rematch between county rivals Alcovy and Newton. The Tigers snatched a two-point win in a classic triple overtime thriller at Newton in December and have won two straight against their county foe.

One man highlight reel

For the first time, the Rockdale and Covington News have transcended county lines to bring the inaugural Rockdale-Newton All-Area Football Team. It represents the top performers from the six schools throughout the two counties for the 2011 football season. As always, it's never easy choosing who deserves to make such a list. Edwards voted region's top offensive player

Devon Edwards had a banner year for Alcovy football in 2011. After sitting out nearly the entire 2010 season with a broken collarbone, Edwards came back with a vengeance to lead the Tigers to a regular-season divisional title and state playoff berth. As a result, coaches throughout Region 3-AAAA agreed he was one of the league's best players and voted him Offensive Co-Player of the Year. Northgate's Alex Lakes shared the honor.

Alcovy opened region play with a decisive win over Griffin Tuesday that left little doubt the Tigers mean business this season.

Alcovy and Newton put on perhaps the most thrilling show two basketball teams could Saturday. After three overtimes and close to three hours of dueling back and forth, it was the Tigers who emerged with a 79-77 win.

GHSA places schools in six classifications for 2012-13

The three county high schools will be in new regions yet again when fall athletics start in 2012. The Georgia High School Association approved the plan to divide its 440 member schools into six classifications - up from five, with the change set to take place next year.

There's a certain sense of excitement surrounding Alcovy's girls' basketball program these days. Winning 25 games and going undefeated in subregion play as they did last year will to do that. Palo signs school’s first basketball scholarship

It's been a busy year for Alcovy basketball star Kate Palo, and the season hasn't even started yet. She was named homecoming queen last month and Thursday she signed a letter of intent to attend Georgia College & State University on a basketball scholarship.

Momentum can be a wonderful thing in sports. When you have it, you feel invincible. Some teams can ride it all the way to a championship. The St. Louis Cardinals and San Francisco Giants – the last two World Series champions, come to mind. But momentum is fleeting. It can come from the smallest things and build at a furious pitch. It can also vanish in an instant.

Not their time

Alcovy's worst fear came to fruition Friday in its Class AAAA playoff game against Tri Cities. With the score tied at 21, the Bulldogs reeled off four straight touchdowns and the Tigers were unable to counter. Tri Cities tacked on a safety late and cruised to a 51-28 win.

Defense is young but talented

At first glance, 2010 was a wasted year for Alcovy football. What positive could possibly come out of a 1-9 season? Then 2011 came around and things turned around in a hurry. The reasons are many. But at the head of Alcovy's transformation are very much those struggles the Tigers went through - rather what came out of them.
