Rockdale/Newton baseball POWER RANKINGS

With most of the teams/schools off this week with Spring Break, here's a look at which teams have been the best with just a couple of weeks left in the season. The baseball playoffs are coming, but there are still some important region battles to take place some big games left to determine final playoff seeding. This is a ranking of how good the teams are so far based primarily on region play, competitiveness, non-region play and head-to-head matchups.

Lady Tigers crush Lady Bulldogs; Rockdale boys down Alcovy

Similarly in terms of wins and losses, but different in terms of play, the Rockdale/Alcovy soccer boys/girls matches ended like they did last time – with Rockdale's boys winning and Alcovy's girls winning.

Total domination

As the Lady Tigers continued to prove their dominance on the pitch, the boys solidified themselves as a team to be reckoned with in Region 2-AAAAAA when both teams finished their respective sweeps of Newton on Friday. Here are five notes from the game on Friday.

Alcovy girls/boys clinch season series over Newton

With the Alcovy girls (9-3, 6-2 Region 2-AAAAAA) and boys (4-1-7, 4-4 Rergion 2-AAAAAA) soccer teams both coming off victories against Newton 9-3, 6-2 Region 2-AAAAAA on Wednesday, one more win would seal the deal for the regular season series and that's what they got as the Lady Tigers blanked Newton 5-0 and the boys came back to win 2-1.

Carlvon honored; Alcovy sweeps Newton

Alcovy, Eastside and Newton's soccer teams all came together Wednesday evening at Sharp Stadium to honor the memory of Carlvon Betts, who passed away two weeks ago in a car accident. Between the boys and girls' games, Newton Athletic Director Tracey Curtis presented Carlvon's parents – Carlton and Tracy Betts – with a package that featured some of Betts's best photos and NHS principal, John Ellenberg, announced that the school would be retiring Betts's jersey.

Bulldogs take season series over Alcovy

It seems like baseball season just started, but yet most teams are already into the most important part of their schedule, region games. It is one thing to start off your region schedule, and it's another to start it against a border-county rival. Alcovy and Rockdale led off its Region 2-AAAAAA schedule with a three-game series against each other.

Austin signs with Truett McConnell

There's always that one moment or season where the parents of a high school athlete realize their child has the ability to use his or her athletic abilities to get a scholarship to attend college. John Richardson and Holly Johnson, the parents of Alcovy wrestler Austin Richardson, saw that moment come to fruition on Tuesday when Richardson signed his letter of intent to attend Truett McConnell.

The basketball regular season is long gone and most teams in the county have seen their respective season come to an end in the state playoffs. Lady Rams/Lady Tigers ousted in playoffs

After coming so close to winning the Region 2-AAAAAA championship, the No. 2 seed Newton Lady Rams hosted the Lady Packers of Colquitt in the first round of the state tournament on Wednesday evening. Newton definitely did not come out with the same energy they had in the region championship, but they did have late push to be in the position to with the game. Ultimately, Newton came up short and was defeated 46-42.
