Hoffman praises new Oakland Raider, Wilkins

Newly signed Oakland Raider Gary Wilkins is attempting to make the team as NFL rookie mini-camps begin around the nation. Wilkins, went from Furman to the Raiders after being signed as an undrafted free agent, but his story started in Covington when Wilkins played for Alcovy under head football coach Kirk Hoffman. The Covington News spoke with Hoffman and asked about Wilkins as a player and a person in this exclusive Q&A.

Wimbush signs to play basketball at Truett-McConnell

Ayanna Wimbush sat down in front of the Alcovy mascot on Friday afternoon to sign her letter of intent to play basketball at Truett-McConnell College with her family next to her and her friends watching she put the pen to the paper and solidified her collegiate career in basketball.

Rockdale/Newton baseball POWER RANKINGS

With most of the teams/schools off this week with Spring Break, here's a look at which teams have been the best with just a couple of weeks left in the season. The baseball playoffs are coming, but there are still some important region battles to take place some big games left to determine final playoff seeding. This is a ranking of how good the teams are so far based primarily on region play, competitiveness, non-region play and head-to-head matchups.

Alcovy girls/boys clinch season series over Newton

With the Alcovy girls (9-3, 6-2 Region 2-AAAAAA) and boys (4-1-7, 4-4 Rergion 2-AAAAAA) soccer teams both coming off victories against Newton 9-3, 6-2 Region 2-AAAAAA on Wednesday, one more win would seal the deal for the regular season series and that's what they got as the Lady Tigers blanked Newton 5-0 and the boys came back to win 2-1.

Carlvon honored; Alcovy sweeps Newton

Alcovy, Eastside and Newton's soccer teams all came together Wednesday evening at Sharp Stadium to honor the memory of Carlvon Betts, who passed away two weeks ago in a car accident. Between the boys and girls' games, Newton Athletic Director Tracey Curtis presented Carlvon's parents – Carlton and Tracy Betts – with a package that featured some of Betts's best photos and NHS principal, John Ellenberg, announced that the school would be retiring Betts's jersey.

Junior Wimbush easing into leading role with Lady Tigers

It hasn't been a smooth transition at times this season for the Alcovy girls varsity basketball team, but if the effort and attitude displayed by junior guard Ayanna Wimbush are any indication, then the Lady Tigers aren't down in the dumps – they're eager to get better. Wimbush, a junior who helped to pace the Lady Tigers to a 22-7 overall record and a perfect 12-0 mark in region play a season ago, has had to take on a more demanding role than the one she held in the past.
