Aubree Thacker: Athlete of the week

Aubree Thacker has been selected as the Alcovy Athlete of the Week for the week of Sept. 22. Thacker's bat was on throughout the entire week. Thacker had five hits and scored two runs against Rockdale and Newton this past week.

Tigers rolls past Newton

In what was likely a preview of the region championship, Alcovy (15-3-1, 8-0 Region 2-AAAAAA) traveled to Newton (9-14, 5-2 Region 2-AAAAAA) in a battle for sole posession of first place in the region. For the second time this season, Alcovy capitalized off Newton's mistakes to take a big lead and never look back, defeating them 7-0.

Alcovy remains undefeated in region

In softball and baseball in the box score 'K' stands for strikeout, in the Alcovy vs. Rockdale game it stood for Kalia Johnson. Standing strong at 13-2, and an undefeated 7-0 in region play, the Alcovy softball team showed no mercy against Rockdale (4-11, 1-5 Region 2-AAAAAA) run-ruling them 9-0 after five innings as Johnson threw seven K's.

Kalia Johnson: Alcovy athlete of the week

Alcovy pitcher Kalia Johnson is the Covington News' Alcovy athlete of the week for the week of Sept. 1. Johnson was a huge factor in the Tigers' 17-0 blowout win over Tucker. Johnson could've picked up another win last week if the Tigers had played just one more inning against Eastside. The game got cancelled due to bad weather with the Tigers leading by a few runs.

Tigers capitalize off errors, top Newton

In high school softball when you're dealing with young players who are still learning, there will be some mistakes. Most games come down to the team that makes the fewest mistakes and on Tuesday that was Alcovy, as they eased to a 9-1 win over a young Newton team.

Tigers fall to 0-2

It was all déjà vu for the Alcovy Tigers (0-2) on Friday night as they took on the Baldwin Braves from Milledgeville, Georgia. In back-to-back weeks, they gave up 30 points on defense, but this time they weren't able to get on the scoreboard, as the Braves torched Alcovy 30-0.

Alcovy to play at Northgate

The Region 3-AAAA championship game is set and Alcovy knows who it will play. By virtue of Northgate's 27-24 win over Whitewater Friday, the Vikings won the Region 3B-AAAA regular-season title and will host the Tigers this week to determine the overall region champion.

Alcovy and Newton needed road wins Friday for different reasons. For the Tigers, a win would give them a state playoff berth and at least one home playoff game. He Rams needed a win just to keep their slim playoffs hopes alive. Neither team accomplished its mission.

Who would have thought?

Until 2008, football games at Sharp Stadium in November were almost always meaningless. Save for the occasional season finale that decided Newton, then later Eastside's playoff fate, Sharp Stadium was usually a ghost town that late in the year. Then Eastside started wining region championships and all of a sudden, football games in Covington in November, specifically playoff games, have become common place.

Much-needed win

After a rough week on the road, Alcovy volleyball got back on track Monday by earning a split in an area tri-match at home. The Lady Tigers topped Riverdale 25-17 and 25-23 to open the match before falling to Dutchtown 14-25 and 13-25.
