Marcene Phillips, 69, of Covington, passed away Feb. 24, 2014. Marcene enjoyed crocheting, traveling to the beach and the mountains, and playing golf with her husband, Dwight. She had an adventurous, outgoing and encouraging spirit, and was the glue that held her family together. Marcene cherished the time spent with her family, and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Papa Mac and Mama Mac.

Howard Spearman Haralson, of Covington, passed away Feb. 24, 2014, at the age of 96. Spearman, as he was known to most, was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Covington for 66 years. In the 1950s he owned and operated his own grocery store, Haralson's Grocery, which was located in town between the bus station and Tri City Cleaners. Spearman closed the grocery store in 1972, to join his wife, Grace, in their family business, Haralson Florist. Together they built a business with a reputation for doing more than expected. Catherine "Lois" Allison passed away Feb. 19, 2014, at her home in Covington. She was 67 years of age. Mrs. Allison loved her family, sports, and watching game shows. Brenda Mae Bruce of Covington passed away Feb. 17, 2014, at the age of 67. Grandma Red, as she was affectionately known by so many, was a lively, spirited lady who loved life, adored her family, and especially cherished her time with her grandchildren. Mrs. Evelyn Childers of Oxford passed away at Newton Medical Center on June 19, 2009, at the age of 77. She was born in Newton County to the Late Travis and Euphie Erma Lunsford Christian. A member of Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church she attended the Harvesters Sunday School Class, played the piano for the Wednesday night church services and sang in the church choir. She enjoyed singing and playing the piano at Covington Manor and the senior center at Turner Lake. She also enjoyed drawing, sewing, singing and cooking. She dearly loved her family.
