Mildred "Mrs. Millie" Maloy, a lifelong resident of Porterdale, passed away September 27, 2014, at the age of 95. She was a member of Porterdale Baptist Church and the Porterdale Woman's Club. Mrs. Millie was known for her sharp mind and quick wit, and therefore gained the nickname, "The General". She loved her family dearly and especially cherished her role as a grandmother. She was loved and will be greatly missed by her family. Mrs. Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Carl B. Maloy; parents, Leo and Candace Shaw; and her brother, Marshall "Pete" Shaw.
Mr. Robert Louis Driskell died May 31. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Willie Louis (Lizzie Kate) Driskell, he was born in 1950 in Covington. The first of nine children, he was raised in Covington and educated in the Newton County School System. Mr. Driskell was a hard worker and employed with Pete Knox Farms and the city of Oxford. Mrs. Ethel Gibson Holt, age 93, of Covington formerly of Jena, LA passed away June 2, 2011. She was born December 22, 1917 in Henderson, Texas to the late Earnest Langhorn and Bessie Hardwick Gibson. Mrs. Holt loved to take care of her family, she was a devoted wife and mother, and was preceded in death by her husband Mr. Fred R. Holt and three Brothers; Oris Gibson, Ferrell Gibson and Odie Gibson.
Mary Goetze, a resident of Social Circle Nursing Home and Rehabilitation Center since 2003, was born in West Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1911. She moved to Georgia to be near her children and grandchildren in 1993. Her parents, Agnes and Joseph Lewein, emigrated from Austria. Mary is preceded in death by her parents, her beloved husband Ferdinand, and her eleven siblings: Jack Lewein; Elizabeth Meehan; George Lewein; Ursula Ralston; Agnes Kaiser; Joseph Lewein; Ferdie Lewein; Steve Lewein; Matt Lewein; Paul Lewein; and Gertrude Poeltzig.
Toby Ronald Williams, age 42, of Oxford, GA passed away May 29, 2011. He is survived by his Mother, Betty Williams his Father, Ronnie and Brenda Williams Grandmother, Doris Williams all of Oxford. He is also survived by his Brothers and Sisters-in-law; Jody and Christy Williams of Maryland and Corey and Mary Williams of Louisiana, 3 nieces and 2 nephews along with several Aunts, Uncles and Cousins.
James (Sonny) W. Kirkpatrick of Covington, passed away May 27, 2011, at the age of 74. Mr. Kirkpatrick was a member of Milstead Baptist Church. He worked for Piedmont Moulding, as supervisor, for more than 30 years. He enjoyed gardening, exercising, and managing his rental properties. Mr. Kirkpatrick loved his family dearly, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ester and Ola Mae (Parker) Kirkpatrick.
Oscar L. Holmes of Covington, passed away May 26, 2011, at the age of 81. Mr. Holmes was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean War. He was a member of Red Oak United Methodist Church. He was a licensed insurance agent, since 1955, and his license was still active at the time of his death. Mr. Holmes was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar L., Sr., and Julia (Jones) Holmes.

Mrs. Karen "Kay" Belcher died May 21. The daughter of Mr. Lindsey Blecher and the late Mrs. Sarah Reed Belcher, Mrs. Baker was born in 1968. She was raised and educated in Newton County, attending Newton County High School. She professed her faith in Christ at an early age, joining Murray C.M.E. Church, singing in the choir and serving as a Junior Usher in the Christian Youth Fellowship Organization. She was a great fundraiser for the church. Mary Frances Hays Wofford, 102, of Oxford, passed away May 25, 2011. Mrs. Wofford was a resident of Covington for more than 58 years. She retired as Switchboard Operator from International Harvester, in 1976, after 34 years of dedicated service. After her retirement, she began her second career as hostess for Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, where she greeted families with that precious smile, for 27 years. Mr. Lewis Hawthorne, age 98, a longtime resident of Mansfield passed away Saturday, May 21, 2011 at his residence. He was born in Valdosta, Georgia on April 11, 1913 to the late William and Mattie Craven Hawthorne. Mr. Hawthorne was a World War II veteran serving in the United States Navy and was a member of the Sea Bees. He was of the Methodist faith a member of Gaither's United Methodist Church. James Roger Gladden, born February 2nd, 1940, peacefully passed away at his home on Tuesday, May 17th, 2011. Roger was born in Shelby, North Carolina. He graduated from Wake Forest University and John Marshall Law School. He served as a second lieutenant in the United States Navy. In 1989, Roger and Lorrie moved from Atlanta to Oxford, where he served nine years as a councilman for the city of Oxford. He was an active member of the Oxford Lion's Club, the Oxford Historical Society, the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Covington, and the American Bar Association.
Mr. Herbert Starr Dial, 87, of Oxford passed away at his residence Friday, May 20, 2011. He was born March 17, 1924 to the late Starr William and Eva Sockwell Dial in Oxford, Georgia. Mr. Dial attended Rehoboth Baptist Church formerly Salem Baptist Church and was a lifelong resident of Oxford. He was preceded in death by his sister, Rachel Cowan his brother, Albert Dial and another brother, Rayford Dial.
Carolyn Fletcher Harris, 72, of Covington, died May 18 at Newton Medical Center. The daughter of the late Grady Franklin Fletcher and Grace Irene Camp Fletcher, she was born in Atlanta and lived in Atlanta and then Morrow for a number of years before moving to Covington in 1992. June Harwell Cochran of Sandy Springs, beloved wife, mother and grandmother, passed away suddenly on May 17. Her sweet, friendly, positive and warm personality will be missed by many, including her husband Charles P. Cochran, son Dr. Charles P. Mr. Larry Elliott, age 78, of Conyers passed away May 19, 2011 at Rockdale Medical Center. He was born January 9, 1933 to the late Bryan and Ruth Ray Elliott in Covington, Georgia and was a longtime resident of the Conyers area.
