Marcene Phillips, 69, of Covington, passed away Feb. 24, 2014. Marcene enjoyed crocheting, traveling to the beach and the mountains, and playing golf with her husband, Dwight. She had an adventurous, outgoing and encouraging spirit, and was the glue that held her family together. Marcene cherished the time spent with her family, and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Papa Mac and Mama Mac.

Howard Spearman Haralson, of Covington, passed away Feb. 24, 2014, at the age of 96. Spearman, as he was known to most, was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Covington for 66 years. In the 1950s he owned and operated his own grocery store, Haralson's Grocery, which was located in town between the bus station and Tri City Cleaners. Mr. John Henry Hitchcock, 71, of Hiawasse, passed away Oct. 30, following a sudden illness. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Webb. He was the son of the late Roy and Evelyn (Adams) Hitchcock and was born in 1942, in Covington. He was a member of Towns County Lions Club, Helen Presbyterian Church and treasurer of the ACS. James "Jim" Dial, of Covington, passed away October 25, 2013, at the age of 50. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Covington, where he enjoyed passing out bulletins at his special door. Jim loved his family and church family dearly. He was the first special-education student to graduate from Newton County High School, and he worked as a mail clerk for the Newton County Courthouse for 11 years.
