He was born May 20, 1937 in Newborn, Georgia to Harvey and Thelma Dobbs Davis who have preceded him in death. Mr. Davis was the owner of S.H. Davis Welding and Repair, Inc. in Newborn for 57 years. Talitha Breed Ozley, wife of Rev. John Ozley, left this life to be with the Lord on June 2 at 2:15 p.m. while in hospice care at home. She was a devoted wife of 65 years, and served with "Preacher John" in various pastoral assignments across North Georgia, the most years of which were in Cherokee and Newton Counties. Brenda Mae Bruce of Covington passed away Feb. 17, 2014, at the age of 67. Grandma Red, as she was affectionately known by so many, was a lively, spirited lady who loved life, adored her family, and especially cherished her time with her grandchildren. She liked spending time outdoors with the animals and traveling to the mountains. Grandma Red loved the holidays, and always enjoyed cooking for her family. She was preceded in death by her husband, Buddy Bruce; parents, Floyd and Lela (Barnwell) Pugh; sister, Lou Norris; and her brothers, Monroe Pugh, Kenneth Pugh and Donald Pugh.

Brandon Gay, of Social Circle, passed away Feb. 13, 2014, at the age of 28. Brandon was a 2004 graduate of Eastside High, and was an avid Michigan Wolverines fan. He loved traveling, especially to Panama City Beach and Hawaii, and enjoyed snorkeling, scuba diving and other water sports. Brandon cherished his family dearly, and enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. He was preceded in death by his mother, Susan Ivey Gay; maternal grandfather, William David Ivey; and his paternal grandfather, William Saunders Gay.

Richard Larry "Gran-paw Tater" Tanner, age 64, of White Plains, Ga., passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2014. Richard was born in Buckhead, Ga., on Dec. 6, 1949. He was the oldest of nine children born to the late Gordon Arlin Tanner and Ina Ellen Burchard Tanner. He was a 1968 graduate of Newton County High School and married Carolyn Ann Mentel on Oct. 24, 1970.
Jack N. Kitchens, of Covington, passed away Feb. 10, 2014, at the age of 77. Mr. Kitchens, a retired U.S. Army veteran, proudly served his country during both the Korean and Vietnam wars. During his 24 years in service, he was awarded the Bronze Star Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal (three times), the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry, and many others. Jessie Martin Wade, of Mansfield, passed away Feb. 10, 2014, at the age of 83. Mrs. Wade attended Covington First United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the Agape Sunday School Class. She retired, from C.R. Bard after 24 years of dedicated employment. In addition to her being an avid artist and gardener, she loved animals and enjoyed cooking and sewing. Mrs. Wade was preceded in death by her husband, John Ellis Wade Sr.; daughter, Jane Elizabeth McIntosh; son, John Ellis Wade, Jr.; grandson, Jason Wade; parents, Elbert and Annie (Culberson) Martin; and six of her siblings.

Mrs. Mildred L. Costley, age 96, of Covington passed away Friday, February 7, 2014. She was born January 19, 1918 in Jasper County to the late Edgar and Mava Kitchens Cunard. Mrs. Costley moved to Covington around 1935 and met her husband while working as a waitress at a restaurant located on the square. Not long after moving to Covington she became a member of the First Baptist Church and is currently the third oldest member. She was very active in her church. Bill was the son of the late William C. and Gertrude English, also of Oxford. Bill served in the United States Army in Vietnam in the late 1960s. He loved collecting arrowheads and unusual rocks.
