Myrtle K. Harper of Covington, passed away June 3, 2011, at the age of 90. She was a life-long resident of Newton County, and member of The Baptist Tabernacle. Mrs. Harper was preceded in death by her husband, Clifford Harper; and her parents, Robert Lee and Maggie Bell (Loyd) Kirkpatrick.
Mrs. Trudy Coady, of Porterdale, GA died June 2, 2011 at Rockdale Medical Center.She was born September 29, 1955 to the late Dewey Lee Smith and Jeanette Brock Long she was also a longtime resident of Newton County.Mrs. Coady was a loving mother and enjoyed flowers especially roses.She was preceded in death by her Husband David Coady in March.
Mr. Timothy "Tim" Dean Day of Milledgeville, GA died Wednesday, June 1, 2011. He was born on March 22, 1962 in Covington, GA to Harold Dean Day and Cornelia Dial Day Kitchens. He served our country in the US Marines and was active in the Toys for Tots program in Massachusetts and California. He was the owner of Home Solutions and loved fishing, grilling and always had a smile on his face. Tim was a loving husband, son, father, grandfather and was affectionately called "Papa T" by his grandchildren.
Mary Jane Meyer Wysocki, 91, of Monticello, died June 2 at The Retreat Nursing Home in Monticello. She was born and raised in Plymouth, Pa. Her parents were the late Joseph Meyer and Agnes Muchler Meyer. She moved to New Jersey as a young woman where she met and married her late husband Stanley Francis Wysocki, who preceded her in death in 1991. Mr. Robert Louis Driskell died May 31. The son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Willie Louis (Lizzie Kate) Driskell, he was born in 1950 in Covington. The first of nine children, he was raised in Covington and educated in the Newton County School System. Mr. Driskell was a hard worker and employed with Pete Knox Farms and the city of Oxford. Mrs. Ethel Gibson Holt, age 93, of Covington formerly of Jena, LA passed away June 2, 2011.She was born December 22, 1917 in Henderson, Texas to the late Earnest Langhorn and Bessie Hardwick Gibson.Mrs. Holt loved to take care of her family, she was a devoted wife and mother, and was preceded in death by her husband Mr. Fred R. Holt and three Brothers; Oris Gibson, Ferrell Gibson and Odie Gibson.

James (Sonny) W. Kirkpatrick of Covington, passed away May 27, 2011, at the age of 74. Mr. Kirkpatrick was a member of Milstead Baptist Church. He worked for Piedmont Moulding, as supervisor, for more than 30 years. He enjoyed gardening, exercising, and managing his rental properties. Mr. Kirkpatrick loved his family dearly, and especially enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ester and Ola Mae (Parker) Kirkpatrick.
Oscar L. Holmes of Covington, passed away May 26, 2011, at the age of 81. Mr. Holmes was a veteran of the United States Army, having served during the Korean War. He was a member of Red Oak United Methodist Church. He was a licensed insurance agent, since 1955, and his license was still active at the time of his death. Mr. Holmes was preceded in death by his parents, Oscar L., Sr., and Julia (Jones) Holmes.

Mrs. Karen "Kay" Belcher died May 21. The daughter of Mr. Lindsey Blecher and the late Mrs. Sarah Reed Belcher, Mrs. Baker was born in 1968. She was raised and educated in Newton County, attending Newton County High School. She professed her faith in Christ at an early age, joining Murray C.M.E. Church, singing in the choir and serving as a Junior Usher in the Christian Youth Fellowship Organization. She was a great fundraiser for the church. Mary Frances Hays Wofford, 102, of Oxford, passed away May 25, 2011. Mrs. Wofford was a resident of Covington for more than 58 years. She retired as Switchboard Operator from International Harvester, in 1976, after 34 years of dedicated service. After her retirement, she began her second career as hostess for Caldwell & Cowan Funeral Home, where she greeted families with that precious smile, for 27 years. James Roger Gladden, born February 2nd, 1940, peacefully passed away at his home on Tuesday, May 17th, 2011. Roger was born in Shelby, North Carolina. He graduated from Wake Forest University and John Marshall Law School. He served as a second lieutenant in the United States Navy. In 1989, Roger and Lorrie moved from Atlanta to Oxford, where he served nine years as a councilman for the city of Oxford. He was an active member of the Oxford Lion's Club, the Oxford Historical Society, the Good Shepherd Episcopal Church in Covington, and the American Bar Association.
