Mrs. Evelyn R. Shaver, age 89, passed away February 11, 2013 at The Benton House of Covington. She was born in Knoxville Tennessee to Rufus and Ida Davis on October 18, 1923. Mrs. Shaver was an avid reader, a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great grandmother who enjoyed spending time with her family. She was preceded in death by her husband Howard Shaver, her son, Maurice Shaver and her son-in-law, Eddie Phillips.
Mrs. Clara Kines Sorrow, 94, of Covington, died Feb. 4. The daughter of Rosa Young Kines and Albert Dean Kines, she was born in Walton County in 1918. She was preceded in death by her husband Solomon B. Sorrow and grandchildren Lywanda and Steven.
Mr. Charles Ray Geiger, age 75, of Covington passed away February 8, 2013 at Newton Medical Center. He was born November 25 1937 in Covington to Charles Henderson and Thelma Allen Geiger. Mr. Geiger was a member of North Covington United Methodist Church and was employed with the City of Covington for 43 years serving as one of the first employees of the Building and Zoning Department. Kyle Jacobs, age 33, of Covington passed away February 7, 2013. He was born February 28, 1979 in Atlanta, Georgia and grew up in Conyers. Kyle graduated from Heritage High School and attended Dekalb College for two years. He then decided to pursue a career as a pipe fitter and welder. Mrs. Margaret Stowe, age 85, of Oxford passed away February 2, 2013 at Abbey Hospice. She was born in Hogansville, Georgia to the late Warner and Ophelia Godfrey Rowe on November 6, 1927. Mrs. Stowe was an avid reader; she enjoyed cooking and was a former member of the Newton General Hospital Auxiliary. Mrs. Elsie Mae Hodges Chaplin, 87, of Stockbridge, died Jan. 31. She was born in Walnut Grove, the daughter of Richard Preston Guthrie and Gaynell Castleberry Guthrie. She was also preceded in death by her husbands Raymond Thomas Hodges and Robert Lee Chaplin, and son Richard Preston Hodges.
Mrs. Pam Carithers, 52, of Covington, passed away Jan. 26 at Newton Medical Center. She was born in Cynthiana, Ky., in 1960. She was the owner and operator of Pam Taxi in Covington. She was also of the Christian faith and a member of Trinity Praise Center.
Mrs. Helen G. Peterson, 98, of Covington and Dunwoody, passed away on Jan. 25. Mrs. Peterson worked in retail sales for Davidson's Department store and eventually became a certified nursing assistant and an ombudsman for area nursing homes. She enjoyed flower gardening and was happily married for 40 years to A. Charles Peterson, who preceded her in death.
Mr. Randy S. Banks, 49, of Covington, passed away on Jan. 23. He loved his family and enjoyed hunting, fishing and spending time with his friends. Mr. Banks was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Martha Banks, sister Deborah Ann Banks and brothers William Boyd Banks, Bob Banks and Tim Banks.
Ms. Mattie Pearl Woods Gaskin passed away on January 15, 2013. She was born on September 24, 1948 to the late Andrew "Blue" and Elnora (Gaither) Woods. Although Mattie was the first born of eleven girls and two boys, her motto was, "I am the first born but I am not the oldest". That is because Mattie had a forever young spirit and a real zest for living life to its fullest. Her father, mother, brother, James "Babyboy" Woods, and live-in aunts, Zola and Lillie Woods preceded her in death.
