Richard Larry "Gran-paw Tater" Tanner, age 64, of White Plains, Ga., passed away on Wednesday, February 12, 2014. Richard was born in Buckhead, Ga., on Dec. 6, 1949. He was the oldest of nine children born to the late Gordon Arlin Tanner and Ina Ellen Burchard Tanner. He was a 1968 graduate of Newton County High School and married Carolyn Ann Mentel on Oct. 24, 1970.
William "Scott" Carpenter, 51, of Covington, passed away Dec. 28. He enjoyed working out and was an avid hunter and sportsman. A horse racing fan, he never missed a Kentucky Derby in 24 years. He loved his family and was a devoted husband, father, son, brother, uncle and friend to many. He was preceded in death by his father William Carpenter and sister Debra Doan.
Dorothy (Dot) Fincher Whaley of Covington passed away December 23, 2013, at the age of 82. Ms. Whaley was a member of Solid Rock Baptist Church, and owned and operated Dot's Diner in Covington. She enjoyed fishing, cooking, traveling and flower gardening. Ms. Whaley loved her family dearly and will be missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her son, Terry McCullers; grandson, Shane McCullers; her parents, Aubrey and Cora Lee (Parker) Fincher; and her lifelong companion, Melvin Whaley.
Ronald Franklin Berry, of Monticello, passed away December 24, 2013, at the age of 77. Mr. Berry collected and restored antique outboard motors and boats, and enjoyed DIY projects. He loved spending time with his grandchildren. Mr. Berry was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, son, brother and friend to many. He was preceded in death by his father, Johnnie Franklin Berry; brother, Ralph Glenn Berry; and aunts, Melba Crenshaw and Evelyn Crenshaw.
Gary Walker, 77, of Covington, passed away December 24, 2013. In 1953, Mr. Walker started Walker Transmission, Inc., in Atlanta, and had five shops operating at one time. He was a hardworking man and had an incredible work ethic when running his business. Mr. Walker enjoyed watching sports and was always willing to help anyone he could. He was preceded in death by his first wife, Mary Walker; and his parents, William and Lilly Mae (Freeman) Walker.
Birdie Louise Watson, of Covington, passed away December 24, 2013, at the age of 82. She loved playing bingo at Kroger and eating at Chick-Fil-A. She enjoyed traveling with the Porterdale Women's Club and attending church at Christ Cornerstone Church. Mrs. Watson was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer Watson; parents, Ira and Maudie Parkes; sister, Betty Allgood; and brothers, Joe Parkes and Carlton Parkes.
Thomas "Tom" M. Joseph Sr., of Covington, passed peacefully in the arms of his wife, Diana, December 25, 2013, at the age of 66. A people person, he owned and operated DJ Package Store, where he loved talking to and meeting new people. He enjoyed NASCAR and was a Dale Earnhardt fan. He enjoyed fishing with his best friend, Ed Needham, sitting around the fire with his friends, and grilling out. He was preceded in death by his father, Sam P. Joseph; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Bobbie and Roy Turner.
Jean (Jinx) Kimbrough O'Neal Faulkner of Covington, GA died December 17, 2013. She was born on August 2, 1927 in Birmingham, AL as the elder child of the late Sara Elizabeth Kimbrough and Lemuel Davis O'Neal. The family returned to their original hometown of Chipley (Pine Mountain), GA in approximately 1930. She graduated from Chipley High School in 1944 and entered the University of Georgia where she was elected President of Delta Delta Delta Sorority in her senior year. Jeb Gregory, of Covington, passed away December 20, 2013, at the age of 45. Jeb worked in the education system for more than 18 years. He enjoyed playing golf, water sports, traveling, cooking and music. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn Smith Gregory.
Mrs. Flora Loyd Copeland, age 88, a lifelong resident of the Covington and Conyers area passed away December 19, 2013. She was born in the Milstead community of Rockdale County to the late Martin and Pearl Coursey Taylor. Mrs. Copeland worked for Bibb Manufacturing for 40 years and was a school bus monitor in Rockdale County for 10 years. She was a great cook and loved to travel, especially traveling to gospel and country singings. Mrs. Copeland was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother and great-great grandmother. Mrs. Margine Tribble, age 78 of Newborn passed away December 17, 2013. She was born in Atlanta to Melvin and Irene Hester who have preceded her in death. Mrs. Tribble worked for many years with Big Apple Grocery Stores around the Atlanta area. She enjoyed gardening, having Bible Studied and she loved music. Mrs. Tribble was preceded in death by her daughter Lynn Daniel, her sisters Frances Beck and Brenda Furtick her brothers Tony Hester and Leonard Hester.
