Joy Trapp of Conyers passed away January 18, 2014, at the age of 54. Joy was a very generous and loving mother who gave her all for the ones she loved. She lived for her family, and considered herself graced and honored to have her grandchildren.

Matthew Wayne Morris, Emory University professor emeritus of French, passed away January 16, 2014, after a long illness. Born Nov. 11, 1942, in the Cincinnati suburb of Newport, Ky., he grew up in Cartersville, Ga. He served four years in the U.S. Navy, including one year in Vietnam in 1967 and three years aboard the USS Sarsfield. He received his Ph.D. in Romance Languages from the University of Georgia in 1977 and began teaching at Oxford College of Emory University in 1978. Ruth Ricks, of Covington, passed away on Jan. 17, 2014, at the age of 79. Her favorite thing to do was to watch old western movies. She also loved working in her yard, taking care of her flowers. When she was able, she enjoyed fishing, camping and sewing. Mrs. Ricks was preceded in death by her first husband, Aaron Ricks; and parents, James W. and Winfred (Saxon) Bruce.
Susan Wilson, age 54, of Conyers passed away January 13, 2014. She was born to the late George Richard and Wanda Rappaport Wilson in Memphis Tennessee on October 10, 1959. The Wilson family moved to Avondale Estates in 1962 and lived there until moving to Conyers when Susan was 16. She was a 1977 graduate of Rockdale High School. Susan was a cosmetologist and formerly owned and operated Hair Motif in Conyers. She loved to crochet and travel with friends.
Maj. Venon Harrison (Vic) Ison, Ret., of Covington, passed away at the age of 90 on January 13, 2014. Maj. Ison was born Nov. 19, 1923, in Cumberland, Ky. He was the son of the late Nick and Jane Ison.

Elsie Eidson Crawford, 90, of Covington, passed away on January 14, 2014, at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle. A native of Carrollton, she had called Covington home since 1950. Mrs. Crawford was a longtime member of First Baptist Church, Covington. She retired from Grand Union (Colonial Stores) with 37 years of service. Mrs. Crawford was preceded in death by her parents, Landis Aquillian and Rebecca McCollum Eidson; her beloved husband, Newell Crawford; and her sister, Ruth Eidson Williams.
Dr. Darrel D. King of Covington went home to be with the Lord January 13, 2014, after a brief battle with leukemia. He was born in 1938, in a farmhouse in Campbell, Mo., to Delbert and Melba (Shaffer) King. The son of a sharecropper, he was educated in a one-room schoolhouse. He often credited his teacher, Althea Malin, with inspiring him to think big and pursue his dreams beyond the Cotton Belt Railroad and the boot heel of Missouri.

Mrs. Mary Josephine Kirkley, age 82, of Oxford passed away at her home Saturday, November 02, 2013 surround by her children. She was born December 18, 1930 in Oxford, Georgia to the late T.C. and Mary Inez Holifield Bryant. Mrs. Kirkley worked for many years as an executive secretary for Oxford Manufacturing and also served as Deputy Tax Commissioner for Newton County where she retired in 1998. Mrs. Sandra Austin, age 67, of Covington passed away Wednesday, October 30, 2013 at her home. She was born in Carrollton Georgia on October 23, 1946 to the late Willard and Myrtle Huckeba Mashburn. Mrs. Austin was a register nurse and worked at Georgia Baptist Hospital in Atlanta specializing in pediatric care. She showed and loved Tennessee Walking Horses. Mrs. Austin was preceded in death by her brother Jerry Mashburn.
Mr. John Henry Hitchcock, 71, of Hiawasse, passed away Oct. 30, following a sudden illness. He was preceded in death by a sister, Carol Webb. He was the son of the late Roy and Evelyn (Adams) Hitchcock and was born in 1942, in Covington. He was a member of Towns County Lions Club, Helen Presbyterian Church and treasurer of the ACS. He was very active in the Northeast Georgia Presbytery and also a member of the Porterdale Presbyterian Church in Newton County.
Benjamin F. Johnson Jr. died Oct. 23. Born in 1923 in Gwinnett County, he was a son of the late Benjamin F. Johnson Sr. and Lillie Leach Johnson. Most of his life was spent in Walnut Grove. He and his wife moved to Park Place Nursing Facility in 2008. After her death, he spent most of his days sitting at his door, greeting people. James "Jim" Dial, of Covington, passed away October 25, 2013, at the age of 50. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Covington, where he enjoyed passing out bulletins at his special door. Jim loved his family and church family dearly. He was the first special-education student to graduate from Newton County High School, and he worked as a mail clerk for the Newton County Courthouse for 11 years. Jim was a happy person and inspired everyone who knew him. He was preceded in death by his father, Cleon Dial.
Tucker Craig Hankins, age 20, of Loganville and Covington passed away October 19, 2013. He was born in Trenton, New Jersey and grew up in Covington. Tucker was a loving, caring young man who had many friends in Covington and Loganville. He enjoyed playing soccer and played at both Alcovy High School and Eastside High School. Tucker loved playing Frisbee and softball; he was a member of the "Sons of Pitches" softball team and worked for On Call Electric.

Andy Hand, 88, of Conyers, passed away Oct. 18, 2013. Mr. Hand was a veteran of the United States Army and proudly served his country during World War II. He retired after 34 years of dedicated service. He was a faithful member of Grace Pointe Church of the Nazarene, in Loganville. He worked for the U.S. Postal Service for 29 years before retirement. Mrs. Jenkins moved at age 4 to Atlanta with her family and moved back to Covington to her Highway 36 home in the 6th grade.
