Mrs. Mildred L. Costley, age 96, of Covington passed away Friday, February 7, 2014. She was born January 19, 1918 in Jasper County to the late Edgar and Mava Kitchens Cunard. Mrs. Costley moved to Covington around 1935 and met her husband while working as a waitress at a restaurant located on the square. Not long after moving to Covington she became a member of the First Baptist Church and is currently the third oldest member. She was very active in her church. John Hollis Lawrence, age 93, who counted his years leading the Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce as among the most fulfilling of his life, died peacefully on Feb. 4, 2014, in Atlanta.
William C. English Jr., age 65, of Oxford, born on March 21, 1948, passed away on January 30, 2014, from complications of diabetes. Bill was the son of the late William C. and Gertrude English, also of Oxford. Bill served in the United States Army in Vietnam in the late 1960s. He loved collecting arrowheads and unusual rocks. He was an avid woodworker and outdoorsman and loved golf.
Mrs. Betty Lou Cook, 76, widow of Gerald B. "Skip" Cook, of Oxford, Ga., passed away Friday, January 31, 2014. Mrs. Cook was born on Jan. 31, 1938, in Georgetown, Ky., to the late John R. and Alice Jones. Mrs. Cook was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church, and was talented in many hobbies, such as cooking, baking, flower arranging, gardening, sewing and many other craft activities. Wynelle Dobson Wyatt, 97, of Covington, went home to be with the Lord, Feb. 5, 2014. Nannie, as she was affectionately called by most, was born in Cumming, Ga., to the late H.P. and Emma (Strown) Glover, and was the oldest of eight children. She married Lonnie H. Dobson in 1935, and they had three children, Ruel, Sandra and Herb. Cora Annelle Singley, age 88, of Monroe, died on February 2, 2014. She was born in Walton County on Dec. 10, 1925, to the late Mollie Cheek Wheelis and the late George Wheelis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Melvin Singley; and three children, Phil Turpin, Richard Thompson, and Deborah Evans.

Raymond Lee Mathis of Covington, passed away Jan. 30, 2014, at the age of 60. Raymond was a hard-working man who would give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need. He loved life, never let anything get him down, had a great sense of humor and was always making people laugh. Raymond adored his family, enjoyed spoiling his children, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and going fishing. Preceding him in death were his parents, Ellis Grover and Marie (Woodard) Mathis.
Mr. Grady Cargile, Jr., age 82, a longtime resident of Covington passed away January 29, 2014 at Abbey Hospice. He was born in the Eudora/ Prospect Community of Jasper County on January 4, 1932 to the late Grady and Ethel Digby Cargile. Mr. Cargile was a veteran of the United States Army serving as a paratrooper during the Korean War. He was retired from General Motors and retired as the head of Quality Control over the Doraville Plant. Mr. Cargile enjoyed woodworking and hunting, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend.
Jessica Neeley of Covington passed away Jan. 23, 2014, at the age 23. She was a wonderful wife and mother. She loved her children dearly. She also loved her family and the Lord. A Southern girl at heart, she lived life to the fullest. Jessica was a free spirit and enjoyed all forms of art, including body art. She was a great friend and would defend her friends to the end.
Betty Anne James of Atlanta passed away January 23, 2014, at the age of 80. Mrs. James was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Her life revolved around her family, but above all she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking, and especially liked preparing her baked spaghetti, chicken and dumplings, chocolate pie and her famous homemade biscuits. Anabel was the daughter of the late Leon and Irene Bleckley of Clayton, Georgia. Anabel is survived by her brother Dr. James Bleckley of Anderson, South Carolina, her daughter Anna Donaldson of Oldsmar, Florida, her son Robert Bickford of Dallas, Texas, and her daughter Candace Wagner of Covington, Georgia. Dr. Charles Samuel Frady, husband, father, grandfather, teacher, and mathematician, passed away on November 13, 2013. Born on September 30, 1937, in Sylva, N.C., to Sarah and Ellis Frady, and one of 11 brothers and sisters,Charlie began life with meager circumstances. At the age of 3, Charlie was stricken with polio, but this tragic diagnosis turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Instead of dropping out of school to work in the town mill, Charlie was able to finish high school, and thus began his journey toward higher education.
Lee Ann Brown, of Covington, passed away November 15, 2013, at the age of 52. She was at home surrounded by her loving family after fighting a long illness.
Nadine White Long, 82, of Porterdale passed away Nov. 11, at Covington Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Long enjoyed sewing and reading. She was a member of Central Community Church in Covington and will be remembered as a devoted wife, aunt and friend to many. Mrs. Long was preceded in death by her parents, Rupert Eugene and Ammerett (Butler) White.
Mary A. Burch of Covington, 92, passed away Nov. 11. Mrs. Burch was a choir member and longtime Sunday School teacher at both Porterdale and Oxford Baptist churches. She was a very Godly woman who loved the Lord and was involved in the homebound ministry, visiting the shut-ins. Mrs. Burch enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, reading and working crossword puzzles. She loved her family dearly and will be missed by all who knew her.
Mary Bowie Whittaker of Covington passed away Nov. 8. The daughter of Roy E. and Odessa Davis Bowie, she was born in 1932, in Manchester. She graduated from Porterdale High School in the Class of 1949 and was also a graduate of Crawford W. Long School of Nursing. Ms. Whittaker worked as a surgical nurse at Georgia Baptist Hospital and for Dr. Charles Dowman for many years. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Joe Whittaker, and her brother, James Richard Bowie.

C.F. Henderson, of Covington, passed away Nov. 7, 2013, at the age of 91. Mr. Henderson was employed by Firestone Tires in Covington for 17 years, and operated Henderson's Phillips 66 Station for many years. After selling his gas station, he worked for Almon Construction Co. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where his son, the Rev. Harold Ray Henderson, served as pastor. Prior to his membership at Grace, he was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Martha K. Hewell of Social Circle passed away November 8, 2013, at the age of 84. She was a member of County Line Baptist Church, where she served as leader of the nursery department for many years.

Minnetta Nelms of Covington passed away November 6, 2013, at the age of 78. Mrs. Nelms taught at Cousins Middle School for more than 30 years. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening and fishing. Mrs. Nelms loved her family dearly, and cherished her time with each of them.

Mr. Holland Adams, 76, of Rutledge, died Nov. 3. The son of Ralph David and Eula Pearl Studdard Adams, he was born in Social Circle in 1937. He was retired from General Motors. Mr. Adams was a member of Social Circle First Baptist Church. He was an avid gardener and cook. Both of these talents were part of his ministry to his community.
