Mrs. Mildred L. Costley, age 96, of Covington passed away Friday, February 7, 2014. She was born January 19, 1918 in Jasper County to the late Edgar and Mava Kitchens Cunard. Mrs. Costley moved to Covington around 1935 and met her husband while working as a waitress at a restaurant located on the square. Not long after moving to Covington she became a member of the First Baptist Church and is currently the third oldest member. She was very active in her church. John Hollis Lawrence, age 93, who counted his years leading the Monticello-Jasper County Chamber of Commerce as among the most fulfilling of his life, died peacefully on Feb. 4, 2014, in Atlanta.
William C. English Jr., age 65, of Oxford, born on March 21, 1948, passed away on January 30, 2014, from complications of diabetes. Bill was the son of the late William C. and Gertrude English, also of Oxford. Bill served in the United States Army in Vietnam in the late 1960s. He loved collecting arrowheads and unusual rocks. He was an avid woodworker and outdoorsman and loved golf.
Mrs. Betty Lou Cook, 76, widow of Gerald B. "Skip" Cook, of Oxford, Ga., passed away Friday, January 31, 2014. Mrs. Cook was born on Jan. 31, 1938, in Georgetown, Ky., to the late John R. and Alice Jones. Mrs. Cook was a member of Mt. Wynelle Dobson Wyatt, 97, of Covington, went home to be with the Lord, Feb. 5, 2014. Nannie, as she was affectionately called by most, was born in Cumming, Ga., to the late H.P. and Emma (Strown) Glover, and was the oldest of eight children. She married Lonnie H. Dobson in 1935, and they had three children, Ruel, Sandra and Herb. Cora Annelle Singley, age 88, of Monroe, died on February 2, 2014. She was born in Walton County on Dec. 10, 1925, to the late Mollie Cheek Wheelis and the late George Wheelis. She was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Melvin Singley; and three children, Phil Turpin, Richard Thompson, and Deborah Evans.

Raymond Lee Mathis of Covington, passed away Jan. 30, 2014, at the age of 60. Raymond was a hard-working man who would give the shirt off his back to help anyone in need. He loved life, never let anything get him down, had a great sense of humor and was always making people laugh. Raymond adored his family, enjoyed spoiling his children, and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and going fishing. Preceding him in death were his parents, Ellis Grover and Marie (Woodard) Mathis.
Mr. Grady Cargile, Jr., age 82, a longtime resident of Covington passed away January 29, 2014 at Abbey Hospice. He was born in the Eudora/ Prospect Community of Jasper County on January 4, 1932 to the late Grady and Ethel Digby Cargile. Mr. Cargile was a veteran of the United States Army serving as a paratrooper during the Korean War. He was retired from General Motors and retired as the head of Quality Control over the Doraville Plant. Mr. Cargile enjoyed woodworking and hunting, he was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great grandfather, brother and friend.
Jessica Neeley of Covington passed away Jan. 23, 2014, at the age 23. She was a wonderful wife and mother. She loved her children dearly. She also loved her family and the Lord. A Southern girl at heart, she lived life to the fullest. Jessica was a free spirit and enjoyed all forms of art, including body art. She was a great friend and would defend her friends to the end.
Betty Anne James of Atlanta passed away January 23, 2014, at the age of 80. Mrs. James was a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and great-great-grandmother. Her life revolved around her family, but above all she enjoyed spending time with her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed cooking, and especially liked preparing her baked spaghetti, chicken and dumplings, chocolate pie and her famous homemade biscuits. Mrs. Flora Loyd Copeland, age 88, a lifelong resident of the Covington and Conyers area passed away December 19, 2013. She was born in the Milstead community of Rockdale County to the late Martin and Pearl Coursey Taylor. Mrs. Copeland worked for Bibb Manufacturing for 40 years and was a school bus monitor in Rockdale County for 10 years. Mrs. Margine Tribble, age 78 of Newborn passed away December 17, 2013. She was born in Atlanta to Melvin and Irene Hester who have preceded her in death. Mrs. Tribble worked for many years with Big Apple Grocery Stores around the Atlanta area. She enjoyed gardening, having Bible Studied and she loved music. Mr. Lewis Jack Brown, 74, of Covington, passed away peacefully at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle Dec.14. Due to a lingering illness, he was a resident of Social Circle Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the past several years. He was a lifelong resident of Newton County, except for the time spent serving his country in the United States Navy. Nina Mae Burnham, 66, of Porterdale, passed away Dec. 14. She was a lifetime member of Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir and the youth leader since 1980. She loved her church family and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many. Mrs. Burnham enjoyed cooking and baking and was the owner of Burnie's BBQ in Porterdale. She was preceded in death by her parents, Plinnie Wilson and Eva Mae (Bailey) Bowen, and brothers, Roy and Troy Bowen.
Doris S. Renfroe, 84, of Covington, passed away Dec. 16. She enjoyed her job, at Wal-Mart, working as a greeter; and loved to fish, cook, and go to Braves games. She had a very generous heart, was always willing to do without so that others might have what they needed, and had a special love for children. Ms. Renfroe was preceded in death by her daughters Joyce Renfroe and Carolyn Renfroe.
Ralph Marion Hurndon, of Jonesboro, passed away December 11, 2013, at the age of 83. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and working in his yard, and he loved his dog, FiFi. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Simmon and Eva Mae (Fields) Hurndon.
Stacy W. Lynch of Covington, 53, passed away Dec. 10, 2013. Mr. Lynch had a larger than life personality and was always the life of the party. He was an avid Georgia Bulldogs fan, and enjoyed deer hunting, listening to music, playing his guitar, cooking and spending time with his family and friends. He cherished his family dearly, especially his grandchildren, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his father, Horace Lynch and his brother, Jody Kevin Lynch.

Roger W. Sheridan, 92, of Newborn, passed away Dec. 3. Mr. Sheridan was the current mayor of Newborn, where he held the record of being the oldest mayor in the country and was a retired Army captain, having served in World War II. He holds two records in "Construction and Engineering" in the Guinness Book of World Records and was a manager for international engineering projects in 32 countries.
