Mildred "Mrs. Millie" Maloy, a lifelong resident of Porterdale, passed away September 27, 2014, at the age of 95. She was a member of Porterdale Baptist Church and the Porterdale Woman's Club. Mrs. Millie was known for her sharp mind and quick wit, and therefore gained the nickname, "The General." She loved her family dearly and especially cherished her role as a grandmother. She was loved and will be greatly missed by her family. Mrs. Millie was preceded in death by her husband, Carl B. Maloy; parents, Leo and Candace Shaw; and her brother, Marshall "Pete" Shaw.
Annelle Townsend, of Oxford, passed away Sept. 26, 2014 at the age of 82. Married to Grady Townsend for 59 years, the couple honeymooned in Daytona, and visited there every year around their anniversary. Mrs. Townsend enjoyed shopping, but most of all she loved being with her family. She was a member of Heritage Hills Baptist Church in Conyers and will be remembered as a great cook – always preparing more than enough. Mrs. Townsend was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Sally Mae Davis; brothers, Buford Davis, R.H. Davis; and sister, Willene Royal.
Vera K. Stalvey, of Covington, passed away September 26, 2014, at the age of 94. Mrs. Stalvey lived in Rome, GA until she moved to Covington in 1975. She was a member of Covington Church of God in Covington, and a former member or East Rome Church of God, where she taught Sunday School. Mrs. Stalvey enjoyed quilting, crocheting and ceramics, but her focus was being a homemaker. She was preceded in death by her husband, Norwood A. Funeral services for Opal O'Dell Graves, 91, of Murphy, North Carolina., were held at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 21, 2014, at Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. The Reverends Edward Carter, Fred Lunsford and Jim Ross officiated. Following the service, interment was in the church's cemetery. She died on Monday, September 15, 2014, after an extended illness.
Glen Selin, 56, of Covington passed away Saturday, September 6, 2014. He was born September 16, 1957 in Hearst, Ontario, Canada to the late William and Edna Selin. Peggy Jean Mathis of Covington, passed away September 22, 2014, at the age of 63. Peggy enjoyed drawing, puzzle books and watching soap operas. She was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was known for her wonderful sense of humor and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Elmer "Mo" Blankenship, Sr. 87, of Oxford, passed away on September 23, 2014 at Newton Medical Center. He was born on May 29, 1927 to the late Mindy Smith Blankenship. Mr. Blankenship was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Covington where he served as a deacon. He served in the US Navy during WWII and was one of the founding members of the Newton County Touchdown Club. Mrs. Jeanne Wiley Driver, age 80, of Covington passed away September 24, 2014. She was born September 12, 1934 in Covington to the late James and Nezzie Prickett Wiley. Mrs. Driver was a loving mother, grandmother, great grandmother and friend; a good Christian woman who was a member of Sardis Congregational Church and attended Gaither's United Methodist Church and Porterdale Presbyterian Church. She loved nature, flowers and was an Atlanta Braves fan. Mrs. Driver was a private duty nurse who sat with many families during extended illnesses; she was loved by everyone who knew her.

Agnes Stephens Campbell died on September 12, 2014, age 92, Marshfield, Wisconsin; formerly of Snellville. Agnes was born in Oxford, Georgia, 1922 to Pauline and Harold Stephens, and was the wife of (late) Thomas Lyle Campbell, mother of Mary Campbell Brown and Tom Campbell. She had six grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.
Penelope (Penny) Cagle Rutledge, age 63, of Porterdale, passed away September 13, 2014, following an extensive illness. She attended Porterdale Baptist Church, and enjoyed crocheting, reading, cooking and listening to music. She especially enjoyed listening to her grandson, Dylan, play the piano, and also spending time with her other grandson, Eli. Ms. Rutledge devoted her life to caring for her parents, daughter and grandsons. She had a great sense of humor and will be missed by all who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Rev. Bill and Maybell Cagle; and her sister, Peggy Batchelor.

Mrs. Elida Tanner, age 80, of Oxford, Georgia passed away September 15, 2014. She was born August 23, 1934 in Miami, Florida to the late Vernon Franklin and Mary Lee Armstrong. Mrs. Tanner was retired from Norfolk Southern Railroad and also worked for Emory University and the Newton County Library. She enjoyed traveling especially out west and to National Parks, she enjoyed gardening, knitting, collecting and she loved frogs.
Catherine Crenshaw Berry, also affectionately known as "Nanny", passed away September 10, 2014, at the age of 100. She enjoyed cooking, quilting, spending time outdoors and canning vegetables. She owned Berry's Boat Dock, and for more than 72 years, people came expecting to see her sitting on the front porch swing! She never met a stranger. Nanny loved animals, but more than anything, she loved her family and cherished her time with her grandchildren. Bobby Nichols, a longtime resident of Mansfield, died April 25 at Social Circle Nursing and Rehab. The son of the late Luther Nichols and Ellie Johnston Nichols, he was born in Newton County in 1929. Mr. Nichols owned and operated a barbershop on Ga. Highway 162 for 37 years, was a member of Mansfield United Methodist Church and enjoyed hunting and fishing.
