Barbara Long of Porterdale, passed away February 6, 2015, at the age of 80. Mrs. Long was an excellent seamstress. She enjoyed crocheting, camping and fishing. Mrs. Long was always willing to lend a helping hand. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother. Mrs. Long will be dearly missed by all who loved and knew her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Lonnie and Estelle Taylor Dunevent; daughter, Glenda Marie Long; son, Virgil Lee (Rip) Long, Jr.; granddaughters, Monica Long and Gina Glass; great-granddaughter, Zoey Jones.

Mike Wayt

Mike Wayt, of Mansfield, passed away February 3, 2015, at the age of 51. Mike loved time spent with family. He was a giving man and would help anyone in need; in fact, he was known for his eagerness to intervene whenever there was a crisis. He enjoyed working with his hands and could fix or build anything. He was proud to be associated with various charities, including Food for the Poor and Jewish Voice Ministries. He was very energetic, and he was a man of great faith in his later years.

Fred Lamar Covington

Lieutenant Colonel Fred Lamar Covington, 79, passed away on January 31, 2015. Colonel Covington was a 20-year veteran of the United States' Air Force, serving as a Senior Electronic Warfare Officer (EWO) and Systems' Management Engineer. During his military career he served in the Vietnam War from 1972 to 1973, where he completed 43 combat missions in the F-105 Wild Weasel, for a total of 128 combat flight hours.

Mr. Wilbur Leslie Mote Jr. of Covington died Jan. 21 at Newton Medical Center. Born in Covington in 1921, he was the son of the late Wilbur L. Mote Sr. and Lois Cowan Mote. He was a member of Bethany Presbyterian Church for many years, serving in the capacity of Deacon and Elder. He wrote a history of Bethany Presbyterian Church. He served in the Army/Air Force with the 5th Reconnaissance Squadron during World War II in the Philippines.

John Frank Dearing

Mr. John Frank Dearing, 93, passed away Jan. 20. The son of the late "Red" and Eula Mooney Dearing, he was born in 1916 in Porterdale. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother Virgil Dearing and sister Nevelyn Gwin. He was a member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in Hoover, Ala. Mr. Dearing started his career in Porterdale Cotton Mill as a young man. He enlisted in Coast Guard in 1937 and returned June 1959 as WO-1. He received medals for American Theatre, European Theatre, Asiatic- Pacific theatre, American defense, Philippines Liberation Bars and Good Conduct Medal.
