Lt. Col. (USAF Ret) Charles "Charlie" Johnston, 96, of Mansfield passed away at Riverside Health Care Center, August 22, 2011. He was a graduate of Tech High in Atlanta. Col. Johnston was a member of the 8th Air Force, serving as a navigator and bombardier in WWII and the Korean Conflict. He was the navigator for the lead plane of the first mass Trans Atlantic flight of the B47, and a member of the Strategic Air Command. He was a decorated officer, retiring after 30 years of service. Catherine L. VanderPloeg of Covington, passed away August 17, 2011, at the age of 100. Mrs. VanderPloeg, along with her late husband, Cornelius, served the Lord as missionaries. Mrs. VanderPloeg specifically led and taught the ladies she met during her missions. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker; and enjoyed sewing and making draperies. She is loved and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. Mrs. VanderPloeg was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Cornelius VanderPloeg; daughter, Barbara Pickett; and her parents, Burr DeForrest and Edith (Baker) Vail.
