Mr. Archie Thomas Mulkey, age 95, of Jefferson, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2014. He was born March 6, 1918, in Bremen, Georgia, a son of the late Elisha Samuel Mulkey and the late Attie Mae Smith Mulkey. Mr. Mulkey was a retired brickmason and was a member of White Plains Baptist Church. Mr. Mulkey was preceded in death by his by his first wife, Lurlene Johnson Mulkey; two brothers; and three sisters.
Sharon Long, of Covington, passed away Feb. 18, 2014, at the age of 72. She enjoyed traveling and going on cruises. Mrs. Long loved her family dearly, and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, Leo and Bernice (Larson) Murphy.
Charles Andrew Hall, of Jackson, passed away Feb. 27, 2014, at the age of 71. He worked for Evans Tool & Dye in Conyers for more than 35 years. He loved his job and his co-workers. Mr. Hall enjoyed watching NASCAR, fishing, hunting, and riding his four-wheeler and tractor. He also loved living and working on his parent's home place, where he enjoyed growing fruit and nut trees. Mr. Hall was preceded in death by his grandson, Trevor Bailey; and parents, Andrew and Marie Hall.
Julian L. Gilbert of Covington died on Feb. 27, 2014, at Heritage Healthcare. He was born Sept. 15, 1921. Mr. Gilbert was a World War II veteran of the United States Army. He was a longtime member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church. He faithfully attended the Adult Sunday School Class and church. He was a Ruling Elder as Elder Emeritus. He enjoyed working on his farm and in his vegetable garden. He loved the animals and walking. He retired from Lithonia Lighting after many years. He was a member of Worthville Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years.
Barbara Ann Schemmel, of Newborn, passed away Feb. 27, 2014, at the age of 50. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.She loved her job as a bus driver for the Newton County School System. Barbara was a metastatic breast cancer survivor for 10 years and active in Newton County Relay of Life. She was also an active member of St. Augustine Catholic Church.
Raymond Carl Hallford, of Oxford, passed away Feb. 27, 2014, at the age of 49. Raymond enjoyed playing basketball when he was younger, and creating spectacular fireworks shows on the Fourth of July. He loved life, adored his family, and cherished his time with them – especially during the holidays. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Jo (Alexander) Hallford.

Katherine Shawl Brewer, 86, of Covington, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014. Mrs. Brewer was a dedicated member of 36 years at High Point Baptist Church in Covington. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kay Griswell. Mrs. Brewer is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Obie Brewer of Covington; daughter, Lynda (Mike) Carter of Covington; son, John (Marsha) Brewer of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Jennifer (Corey) Bridwell, Alan (Suzanne) Carter, Amy (Jason) Parker, Jeffrey Brewer, and Christy (Tony) Smith; and a sister, Bettie Miller.
Stephen Joseph Brown, 72, of Logansport, passed away Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, in his residence after a battle with cancer.
Marcene Phillips, 69, of Covington, passed away Feb. 24, 2014. Marcene enjoyed crocheting, traveling to the beach and the mountains, and playing golf with her husband, Dwight. She had an adventurous, outgoing and encouraging spirit, and was the glue that held her family together. Marcene cherished the time spent with her family, and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Papa Mac and Mama Mac.
Gary Carl Martin, 52, of Covington, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014. Gary served in the United States Air Force and he was once employed at Walker Harris Chrysler dealership as a service adviser, until he became disabled.
Howard Spearman Haralson, of Covington, passed away Feb. 24, 2014, at the age of 96. Spearman, as he was known to most, was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Covington for 66 years. In the 1950s he owned and operated his own grocery store, Haralson's Grocery, which was located in town between the bus station and Tri City Cleaners. Spearman closed the grocery store in 1972, to join his wife, Grace, in their family business, Haralson Florist. Together they built a business with a reputation for doing more than expected. Nadine White Long, 82, of Porterdale passed away Nov. 11, at Covington Manor Nursing Home. Mrs. Long enjoyed sewing and reading. She was a member of Central Community Church in Covington and will be remembered as a devoted wife, aunt and friend to many. Mrs. Long was preceded in death by her parents, Rupert Eugene and Ammerett (Butler) White.
Mary A. Burch of Covington, 92, passed away Nov. 11. Mrs. Burch was a choir member and longtime Sunday School teacher at both Porterdale and Oxford Baptist churches. She was a very Godly woman who loved the Lord and was involved in the homebound ministry, visiting the shut-ins. Mrs. Burch enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening, reading and working crossword puzzles. She loved her family dearly and will be missed by all who knew her.
Mary Bowie Whittaker of Covington passed away Nov. 8. The daughter of Roy E. and Odessa Davis Bowie, she was born in 1932, in Manchester. She graduated from Porterdale High School in the Class of 1949 and was also a graduate of Crawford W. Long School of Nursing. Ms. Whittaker worked as a surgical nurse at Georgia Baptist Hospital and for Dr. Charles Dowman for many years. She was preceded in death by her beloved son, Joe Whittaker, and her brother, James Richard Bowie.

C.F. Henderson, of Covington, passed away Nov. 7, 2013, at the age of 91. Mr. Henderson was employed by Firestone Tires in Covington for 17 years, and operated Henderson's Phillips 66 Station for many years. After selling his gas station, he worked for Almon Construction Co. He was a member of Grace Baptist Church, where his son, the Rev. Harold Ray Henderson, served as pastor. Prior to his membership at Grace, he was a member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church.
Martha K. Hewell of Social Circle passed away November 8, 2013, at the age of 84. She was a member of County Line Baptist Church, where she served as leader of the nursery department for many years.

Minnetta Nelms of Covington passed away November 6, 2013, at the age of 78. Mrs. Nelms taught at Cousins Middle School for more than 30 years. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, gardening and fishing. Mrs. Nelms loved her family dearly, and cherished her time with each of them.

Mr. Holland Adams, 76, of Rutledge, died Nov. 3. The son of Ralph David and Eula Pearl Studdard Adams, he was born in Social Circle in 1937. He was retired from General Motors. Mr. Adams was a member of Social Circle First Baptist Church. He was an avid gardener and cook. Both of these talents were part of his ministry to his community. James Douglas Ivey, 55, of Oxford, passed away Nov. 3. He was a devoted husband, father, son, brother and friend to many. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, woodworking and gardening. Mr. Ivey also enjoyed photography and traveling, especially to the mountains.
Jackie Paul "Jack" Tomlin, 68, of Woodville, Ga., passed away on November 2, 2013, at Athens Regional Medical Center. He suffered from a sudden aortic dissection and was unable to recover.

Mrs. Mary Josephine Kirkley, age 82, of Oxford passed away at her home Saturday, November 02, 2013 surround by her children. She was born December 18, 1930 in Oxford, Georgia to the late T.C. and Mary Inez Holifield Bryant. Mrs. Kirkley worked for many years as an executive secretary for Oxford Manufacturing and also served as Deputy Tax Commissioner for Newton County where she retired in 1998.
