Mr. Archie Thomas Mulkey, age 95, of Jefferson, passed away on Sunday, March 2, 2014. He was born March 6, 1918, in Bremen, Georgia, a son of the late Elisha Samuel Mulkey and the late Attie Mae Smith Mulkey. Mr. Mulkey was a retired brickmason and was a member of White Plains Baptist Church. Mr. Mulkey was preceded in death by his by his first wife, Lurlene Johnson Mulkey; two brothers; and three sisters.
Sharon Long, of Covington, passed away Feb. 18, 2014, at the age of 72. She enjoyed traveling and going on cruises. Mrs. Long loved her family dearly, and especially enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her parents, Leo and Bernice (Larson) Murphy.
Charles Andrew Hall, of Jackson, passed away Feb. 27, 2014, at the age of 71. He worked for Evans Tool & Dye in Conyers for more than 35 years. He loved his job and his co-workers. Mr. Hall enjoyed watching NASCAR, fishing, hunting, and riding his four-wheeler and tractor. He also loved living and working on his parent's home place, where he enjoyed growing fruit and nut trees. Mr. Hall was preceded in death by his grandson, Trevor Bailey; and parents, Andrew and Marie Hall.
Julian L. Gilbert of Covington died on Feb. 27, 2014, at Heritage Healthcare. He was born Sept. 15, 1921. Mr. Gilbert was a World War II veteran of the United States Army. He was a longtime member of Hopewell Presbyterian Church. He faithfully attended the Adult Sunday School Class and church. He was a Ruling Elder as Elder Emeritus. He enjoyed working on his farm and in his vegetable garden. He loved the animals and walking. He retired from Lithonia Lighting after many years. He was a member of Worthville Masonic Lodge for more than 50 years.
Barbara Ann Schemmel, of Newborn, passed away Feb. 27, 2014, at the age of 50. She was a loving wife, mother and grandmother.She loved her job as a bus driver for the Newton County School System. Barbara was a metastatic breast cancer survivor for 10 years and active in Newton County Relay of Life. She was also an active member of St. Augustine Catholic Church.
Raymond Carl Hallford, of Oxford, passed away Feb. 27, 2014, at the age of 49. Raymond enjoyed playing basketball when he was younger, and creating spectacular fireworks shows on the Fourth of July. He loved life, adored his family, and cherished his time with them – especially during the holidays. He was preceded in death by his mother, Mary Jo (Alexander) Hallford.

Katherine Shawl Brewer, 86, of Covington, passed away Tuesday, Feb. 25, 2014. Mrs. Brewer was a dedicated member of 36 years at High Point Baptist Church in Covington. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Kay Griswell. Mrs. Brewer is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Obie Brewer of Covington; daughter, Lynda (Mike) Carter of Covington; son, John (Marsha) Brewer of Jacksonville, Fla.; grandchildren, Jennifer (Corey) Bridwell, Alan (Suzanne) Carter, Amy (Jason) Parker, Jeffrey Brewer, and Christy (Tony) Smith; and a sister, Bettie Miller.
Stephen Joseph Brown, 72, of Logansport, passed away Monday, Feb. 24, 2014, in his residence after a battle with cancer.
Marcene Phillips, 69, of Covington, passed away Feb. 24, 2014. Marcene enjoyed crocheting, traveling to the beach and the mountains, and playing golf with her husband, Dwight. She had an adventurous, outgoing and encouraging spirit, and was the glue that held her family together. Marcene cherished the time spent with her family, and will be greatly missed by those who knew and loved her. She was preceded in death by her parents, Papa Mac and Mama Mac.
Gary Carl Martin, 52, of Covington, died Tuesday, Feb. 18, 2014. Gary served in the United States Air Force and he was once employed at Walker Harris Chrysler dealership as a service adviser, until he became disabled.
Howard Spearman Haralson, of Covington, passed away Feb. 24, 2014, at the age of 96. Spearman, as he was known to most, was a faithful member of the First Baptist Church of Covington for 66 years. In the 1950s he owned and operated his own grocery store, Haralson's Grocery, which was located in town between the bus station and Tri City Cleaners. Spearman closed the grocery store in 1972, to join his wife, Grace, in their family business, Haralson Florist. Together they built a business with a reputation for doing more than expected. Jeb Gregory, of Covington, passed away December 20, 2013, at the age of 45. Jeb worked in the education system for more than 18 years. He enjoyed playing golf, water sports, traveling, cooking and music. He was preceded in death by his mother, Marilyn Smith Gregory.
Mrs. Flora Loyd Copeland, age 88, a lifelong resident of the Covington and Conyers area passed away December 19, 2013. She was born in the Milstead community of Rockdale County to the late Martin and Pearl Coursey Taylor. Mrs. Copeland worked for Bibb Manufacturing for 40 years and was a school bus monitor in Rockdale County for 10 years. Mrs. Margine Tribble, age 78 of Newborn passed away December 17, 2013. She was born in Atlanta to Melvin and Irene Hester who have preceded her in death. Mrs. Tribble worked for many years with Big Apple Grocery Stores around the Atlanta area. She enjoyed gardening, having Bible Studied and she loved music. Mr. Lewis Jack Brown, 74, of Covington, passed away peacefully at Abbey Hospice in Social Circle Dec.14. Due to a lingering illness, he was a resident of Social Circle Nursing and Rehabilitation Center for the past several years. Nina Mae Burnham, 66, of Porterdale, passed away Dec. 14. She was a lifetime member of Julia A. Porter United Methodist Church, where she was a member of the choir and the youth leader since 1980. She loved her church family and was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend to many. Mrs. Burnham enjoyed cooking and baking and was the owner of Burnie's BBQ in Porterdale. She was preceded in death by her parents, Plinnie Wilson and Eva Mae (Bailey) Bowen, and brothers, Roy and Troy Bowen.
Doris S. Renfroe, 84, of Covington, passed away Dec. 16. She enjoyed her job, at Wal-Mart, working as a greeter; and loved to fish, cook, and go to Braves games. She had a very generous heart, was always willing to do without so that others might have what they needed, and had a special love for children. Ms. Renfroe was preceded in death by her daughters Joyce Renfroe and Carolyn Renfroe.
Ralph Marion Hurndon, of Jonesboro, passed away December 11, 2013, at the age of 83. He enjoyed golfing, fishing and working in his yard, and he loved his dog, FiFi. He was preceded in death by his parents, James Simmon and Eva Mae (Fields) Hurndon.
Stacy W. Lynch of Covington, 53, passed away Dec. 10, 2013. Mr. Lynch had a larger than life personality and was always the life of the party. He was an avid Georgia Bulldogs fan, and enjoyed deer hunting, listening to music, playing his guitar, cooking and spending time with his family and friends. He cherished his family dearly, especially his grandchildren, and will be missed by all who knew and loved him. He was preceded in death by his father, Horace Lynch and his brother, Jody Kevin Lynch.

Roger W. Sheridan, 92, of Newborn, passed away Dec. 3. Mr. Sheridan was the current mayor of Newborn, where he held the record of being the oldest mayor in the country and was a retired Army captain, having served in World War II. He holds two records in "Construction and Engineering" in the Guinness Book of World Records and was a manager for international engineering projects in 32 countries.
