Happy International Year of Astronomy

It's a new year filled with hope and great expectations, and it has also been designated as the "International Year of Astronomy." This is supposed to be a year to educate the public and to celebrate astronomy that's something I have been doing most of my life.

Venus is the stunning object in the western sky after sunset. The planet will continue to move higher in the sky until Jan. 12, when it will be 47 degrees away from the Sun, as far away from the Sun as it can be. From that point on, the planet will ...

When my time comes, stuff me

There are a lot of people who are troubled by the prospects of their own death.

Be the change

As the inauguration approaches, it seems we hear as much about change as about history.

Gifts of time and fun

'Twas the day after Christmas, and all through the house, wrapping paper and empty boxes lay strewn all over the floor.

But wait, don't throw out the boxes.

The best and worst of times

"It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its ...

New year, new skills

My cousin told her 4-year-old daughter, Aley, that she's becoming a little girl, and she's not so sure she's happy about that development.

Eat your vegetables

here's a song that says Christmas is "The Most Wonderful Time of the Year." You might agree with that, but I don't. Christmas is indeed fabulous, but I think the most wonderful time comes after the holiday festivities are over. I can hang up my Martha Stewart apron and send her packing 'til Easter, while I simply rest with nothing pressing on my calendar.

Procrastination (I’ll write this article tomorrow)

This afternoon I was confronted with a choice: write an article for The Covington News or work outside with the horses. I chose the horses because that was the thing I wanted to do and, besides, I didn't know what I was going to write. And it was a pretty day. The fact that this piece is due tomorrow and the horses didn't particularly need any attention did not persuade me to do the more responsible and sensible thing. So I put off writing this article until now, when it is late and has to be written because ...

Consider financial gifts to family

At this time of year, you may be thinking about finding the "perfect" gifts for various family members. You can find any number of thoughtful presents, but if you'd like to give something that can have an impact long after the holiday season is over, consider making a financial gift.

You could, of course, just write a check. But you may be able to do more for your intended recipients by finding a more creative gift. Here are a few possibilities:

The gift of time

We are living in a time when we all have doubts and fears - about our jobs, our world, our future. We are living in a recession. We are struggling. We are worried. But, the Spirit of Christmas is alive and well, and it's up to all of us to find ways to nurture that spirit and enjoy the season without getting caught up in a spending frenzy. Christmas has always been about giving and generosity, but our culture of materialism and consumerism can cause stress and anxiety, as well as empty wallets. By getting creative with our giving, we ...
