Welcome Inn being demolished

The Welcome Inn will soon be a memory. The building frequently seen on television in the late 80's on the NBC television hit series "in the heat of the night." Tadio Robinson with Enviro Masters told me he and his crew were there to remove hazardous materials including asbestos before the wrecking ball could do the rest. The complete destruction of the building should occur within the next week.

Social Circle students win state title in problem solving competition

Social Circle High School students Stephen Conner, Jada Graves, Dana Hopkins, and Ben Ihde recently participated in the Future Problem Solving Competition at the Classic Center in Athens. The SCHS team beat out eight other high school teams to win First Place Overall and the state title. In addition, they received third place in the Planning Competition, and second place in the Presentation Competition.

The Future Problem Solving Program International is an international academic competition oriented around a topic, selected from a list. This year's topics were the Olympic Games, Cyber Conflict, Space Junk, Counterfeit Economy and Pandemic. More ...

Preparing for the Chastity Ball

A few of the 50 teen and pre-teen age young ladies participating in the Chastity Ball dropped by the Ivy Vine to be fitted for their gowns on Friday. The day-long event, held April 18 at the A.P. Henderson Community Center in Social Circle, includes workshops emphasizing abstinence, classes on etiquette, sessions with an adult mentor and a tea for younger girls. The night will be capped off with a ball, where each girl will be presented and escorted by a male relative.

Reaching for the sky: Members of the Social Circle Boys and Girls Club participate in stretching and cardio exercises during the PeachCare for Kids Day and Health Fair on Friday. Participants included PeachCare, MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving), Amerigroup, which paid the SCBGC membership fee for those enrolled in Amerigroup, the Social Circle Ace Hardware store and the Wal-Mart of Covington, which provided free vision screenings. Police: Gang graffiti traced to local teen

At least one local juvenile was identified as the alleged culprit behind an incidence of graffiti discovered March 4 in the Windsong subdivision in Social Circle, according to School Resource Officer and Gang Investigator Jason Stribling of the Social Circle Public Safety Department.

The juvenile, a 16-year-old male from Social Circle, admitted to the incident when taken into custody, and he was released that same morning, said Stribling. The teen faces juvenile charges of damage to property and the commission of gang activity. Stribling is investigating allegations of another teen possibly being involved.

Living History

The Youth Exposure Club of Social Circle held a performance, "Remembering Our Past and Shaping Our Future," capping off Black History Month at the Social Circle Theater on Feb. 27. Students recited speeches and performed as iconic figures in black history, from inventor and educator Dr. George Washington Carver to Mae Jemison, the first black female astronaut. Outside, exhibitors displayed educational materials.
