"Be the boss of you" is the slogan for the Boss Brothers Breast Cancer Trail Ride, which is focused on raising money for people in the local area fighting the tough fight against this formidable foe.
"It's summertime and the living is easy," wrote DuBose Heyword, lyricist for George Gershwin's Porgy and Bess. In Social Circle, the living is not so easy given preparations for the beginning of school on Aug. 9, and the scurry of preparations for many fall events. We have had a few noteworthy happenings this summer:
Social Circle Council Member David Keener received the prestigious Certificate of Recognition from the Georgia Municipal Training Institute at the Georgia Municipal Association's 77th Annual Convention in Savannah on June 28.
Last week at Social Circle's city council meeting, resident Lurie Maddox called on the council to do something unexpected: resign.
The proposed 2010-2011 budget was presented to the Social Circle city council at a public hearing held Tuesday night.
Social Circle Better Hometown announced Tuesday morning that several areas in Social Circle have been declared an Opportunity Zone by the Georgia Department of Community Affairs. It is the 33rd such zone in Georgia.
The American Competitive Trail Horse Association will be organizing a Ride for Horses event on June 13. Each state across the country will host an ACTHA-sanctioned ride and, in doing so successfully, will be entered into Guinness World Records for the largest competitive ride ever held. Georgia's participation in the event will be held at Peters Creek Farms in Social Circle.
Shakespeare had a pretty dim view of life. For example, Macbeth described life as "a walking player that struts and frets his hour upon the stage and then is heard no more." In Social Circle, however, we do a lot of strutting upon the stage, but the reverberations are loud and long lasting. For one thing, folks in our city are starting to think and act globally. For instance, Social Circle Primary School and Social ...
The Social Circle Kruizers will be holding their first Memorial Day car show and barbecue in downtown Social Circle on Monday. Current and past members of the military and their immediate families are invited and will be fed for free. Proceeds from the event will be donated to the family of Morgan County volunteer firefighter Keven Stephenson, who was injured two months ago in a car accident. Proceeds will help his family, including his 18-month-old daughter.
The Social Circle city council unanimously approved an ordinance Tuesday evening that de-annexes all Social Circle land in Newton County effective immediately.
The amplified voices noticeably echoed in the mammoth 1.5 million square-foot distribution center, but the message was clear: General Mills is ready for business. The ceremonial ribbon was cut Wednesday, and the first shipment of General Mills goods will be delivered to the Social Circle plant Monday. "It took us less than six months to close the deal. In less than 11 months we've broken ground. They're ready for operation," said W. Morris Jordan, chairman of the ...

• The BOE accepted a bid from Covington Windows for $311,388.84 for janitorial services for next year. The school outsourced janitorial services as a cost cutting major.
Despite T.S. Eliot's description of April as being the "cruelest month," in Social Circle April turned out to be our kindest month in terms of citizen involvement. Social Circlites were like little daffodils, with happy faces emerging from the wetness and doldrums of winter. Four city events produced record turnouts and more volunteerism than we have seen in a long time. Our annual Easter Egg Hunt on April 4 attracted 167 "hunters" and more than ...
