Social Circle is losing our highly respected Superintendent of Social Circle City Schools who plans to retire at the end of the current school year. Actually, Dr. Bettye Ray is not really leaving the city and she is not really retiring. She has other plans for the future which I was privileged to learn about from her. I have served with Dr. Ray on various volunteer projects over the years and have been extremely impressed with her knowledge, leadership and, most of all, her professional manner.

I love a chapter from "The Prophet" where Prophet Kahlil Gibran speaks of religion: "Who can separate his faith from his actions, or his belief from his occupations? Who can spread his hours before him saying, 'This for God and this for myself; this is for my soul, and this other for my body?'" For me, this suggests that the way we live expresses our deepest faith. I thought about that in recognizing how important our churches have been in supporting our community. For example, at our recent city-wide cleanup, almost all of our churches showed up to help.

Council agrees to take low bid for Blue Willow Inn sidewalk

Social Circle council members agreed Tuesday to take the low bid for the continuing design phase of a sidewalk that would link the Blue Willow Inn and downtown.

The city had two proposals for the project, one for $44,500 from Urban Collage and one for more than $60,000 from Kimberly-Horne & Associates. All council members voted unanimously to continue working with Urban Collage (which had previously worked with the city).
