Newton graduate gains experience and a paycheck

Timari Fears, a 2012 Newton County High School graduate, spent five weeks this summer working at the city of Porterdale. This opportunity was made possible by the Workforce Investment Act In-School Youth Program. Fears worked as an assistant to the city and court clerk of the city of Porterdale. Fears developed new skills, including effective interaction with the public and co-workers, presenting herself professionally in a government office, and valuable organizational skills.

Pine Valley Mission gives school supplies

Six-year-old Myles Blackstock and his five-year-old sister Phoebe Blackstock received their school supplies at the Pine Valley Mission Thursday evening. Myles will be in their first grade and Phoebe in kindergarten at Middle Ridge. The mission gave out completed bookbags to more than 50 students with school clothes and shoes to follow at a later date. The mission is staffed by volunteers and furnishes school needs the entire school year. The mission is located at 12185 Ga. Highway 36 and has been at the same location for more than 20 years.

Emily Wyatt awarded scholarship by UGA

Emily Lucille Wyatt of Covington has been selected to receive the Southern States Cooperative Scholarship awarded by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences for the 2011-2012 academic year. Each year the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences awards approximately $100,000 in scholarships to students studying in any of their 24 majors.

Chick-fil-A awards Covington’s Amy Hill

Chick-fil-A's 38-year-old national Leadership Scholarship program has awarded Amy Hill, a restaurant team member from Covington, a $1,000 scholarship. The scholarship was presented to Hill by Chick-fil-A franchise operator Chris Giella at the restaurant in Newton Plaza. Hill is the 20th team member from that location to receive the honor, and she is currently attending Georgia Perimeter College studying business administration.

Miss Georgia Collegiate America

Kaitllyn Bruce, a native of Oxford and junior at the University of Georgia, was crowned 2012 Miss Georgia Collegiate America Aug. 6 in Macon. Bruce competed in interview, fun fashion, evening gown and on-stage question.

She has won up to a $1,000 scholarship and will represent Georgia at the National Miss Collegiate America Pageant in San Antonio, Texas, in March. She will also make many appearances and participate in community service events around the state of Georgia for the year.

Local student earns GED

Local graduate: D'Mario Freeman graduated from DeKalb Technical College during its graduation ceremony on May 21. D'Mario started attending GED classes held at Nelson Heights Community Center in September 2010 when non-profit Newton County Reads started holding classes there. D'Mario attended classes each week and worked hard, officials said. D'Mario now plans to attend college or the military, options he did not have before he received his GED. He is the first graduate at the Nelson Heights site and was an inspiration to the other students enrolled in the Newton County Reads program who were present ...
