Thornton convicted on all counts

Arrest made in gas station burglaries

On March 11, the Newton County Sheriff's Office responded to and investigated a burglary at the BP gas station located at 3501 Salem Road. Responding deputies and NCSO investigators were able to obtain store video which showed a black male in a silver vehicle make entry into the store.

Student’s poster wins in state

Ashley Simmons, a third grade student at Heard-Mixon, won first place in the state in the Drug Awareness Poster Contest for students from third to fifth grade sponsored nationally by the Elks and Elkadettes and locally by the Covington Elks and Elkadettes. She received a check for $50 from the Northeast District Elks and Georgia Elks Auxiliary. She also received a $100 check for placing first in the state of Georgia. Sheriff’s Office implements new shift rotation

On April 26, Newton County Sheriff Ezell Brown implemented a new 12 hour shift rotation system for the Uniformed Patrol Division of the Sheriff's Office. During the first quarter of this year alone (Jan. 1-March 31), Newton County Sheriff's Office deputies have answered over 15,000 documented calls for service. Under the old shift rotation system, deputies were working extra days, long hours and a lot of overtime to cover the necessary demands of the NCSO Patrol Division.
