The residents of Covington have spoken, and as a result, city residents are no longer able to receive a permit to shoot squirrels or other rodents on their property.

One killed in afternoon wreck

A man was killed this afternoon at around 3 p.m. when two vehicles were involved in a head-on collision on Lower River Road.
Newton County Sheriffs Office and the Georgia State Patrol are currently investigating the accident.

Man accused of shooting deputies named

Authorities have released the name of the man accused of shooting two Newton County deputies Monday afternoon. According to authorities, 20-year-old Thomas Powell was found dead in his home on Parker Road following a four-hour stand off which began after he reportedly shot the deputies

Square resurfacing, closure rescheduled

Resurfacing of the Covington square will take place from 9 p.m. Aug. 8 through the afternoon of Aug. 9, weather permitting.

The Covington square closure, originally planned for Aug. 1 had to be rescheduled due to rain.

Square closed for resurfacing part of Saturday, Sunday

Update: Pittman Construction was unable to resurface the roads around the square this past weekend because of the rain on Saturday night. Construction Foreman Danny Baker said the company plans to resurface the square this weekend, using the same timetable, from 9 p.m. on Saturday to noon on Sunday, and the same detour plan, see below. Pittman will be working on the main line of Ga. Highway 36, from Covington ByPass Road to the square, this week.

Highway 36 work to be completed Friday

After working for 15 straight hours, construction crews should be finished working on Highway 36 around the square by noon today - assuming the rain holds off. The completion of the entire 2.7 mile 36 resurfacing project should be finished by Friday, said Robert Moon, Assistant Area Engineer for the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The Covington Century Bike Ride

Over 1,300 geared-up bike riders crowded Elks Club Road in Covington early Saturday morning for the 21st Annual Covington Century Bike Ride to benefit Project Adventure Kids. Riders stretched anxiously and smiled encouragingly to one another as the final minutes of rest counted down. At 8:00 a.m., the waiting was over and they were off, pedaling away from what would eventually become their finish line.

Work finished at Alcovy Road, I-20, more to begin soon

Newton County residents who regularly drive along Alcovy Road and Ga. Highway 142 around Interstate 20, will notice something missing this afternoon. Every day for the last two and a half years those orange-and-white stripped barrels have lined the roads, slowing traffic, blocking lanes and causing delays.

City council members decline pay raises for mayor, themselves

For the second time this year, the city council decided not to raise their positions salaries for 2010. In an unofficial vote done by e-mail, Mayor Kim Carter said the council's consensus, by 4 to 2, was to not put the item on the council's agenda anytime soon - essentially to not vote for raises for next year.

Once again, the Covington Lions will hold a Covington Idol competition at their Oct. 9-10 Sherman's Last Burning Fall Festival and BBQ Cook-Off at Legion Field on Mill Street. This time, however, a Jr. Idol (for 17 and under) is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 9 at 6 p.m. The Covington Idol (for 18 and older) is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 10 at 2 p.m. The Lions promise these two events will be the highlight of the Fall Festival.
