Library implements quiet Thursdays

Beginning on Jan. 28 Newton County Library employees will be asking everyone who comes into the library on Thursdays to be especially quiet. Staff members have had numerous requests to lower the noise from cell phones, loud conversations, children screaming and other disruptions that make it difficult to study.

City Council approves increased Chamber of Commerce spending

The Covington city council voted to increase its investment in the Chamber of Commerce by $66,500 in an effort to recruit a highly-qualified president and bring in more business.

Chamber President John Boothby resigned in Sept., but the chamber has been unable seriously to pursue replacements, because it has been in discussion with the city and county about the future direction of and level of spending on economic development.

Covington Athletic Club closes its doors

The Covington Athletic Club shut down Friday, but a group of local members are trying to band together to purchase and reopen their beloved gym.

The club has been a community staple since it opened 22 years ago, but current owner Philip Johnson, a local lawyer, had to close it as membership continued to drop. In 2006, the club had more than 2,000 members, but as of last week that number had dropped to 1,400.
