Meadors surges to runoff in BOE race

Ronald Cary Hart has qualified to run for the District 1 seat, which is being vacated by Johnny Smith, of the Newton County Board of Education.
BOE District 1 - Jeffrey Meadors (R)
Jeffrey Meadors, dual enrollment coordinator for Georgia Perimeter College's Newton and Rockdale campuses, has announced his intention to run for the Newton County Board of Education District 1 seat on the Republican ticket. Council member Johnny Smith, who currently holds the seat, has announced that he does not plan to run again after six years in office.
BOE District 1 - Dale M. Thompson (R)
Dale M. Thompson said that his decision to run for the Newton County Board of Education District 1 seat, being vacated by Johnny Smith, was due to a lack of candidates with his level of experience having qualified in the district.

Toney D. Collins is running for the BOE because he wants to have a say in the changes affecting his teacher wife and his two school-aged children.

Christine Young-Brown is the fourth democratic candidate to qualify for the increasingly crowded District 3 BOE seat. She said she's running because she feels the current board was neither effective nor connected to the public, and she wants a better school system for her two children.
