Barack Obama wins re-election in tight race

President Barack Obama rolled to re-election Tuesday night, vanquishing former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and prevailing despite a weak economy that plagued his first term and put a crimp in the middle class dreams of millions.

As of press time Tuesday night Barack Obama won in Newton County with 21,844 votes, while Mitt Romney had 20,979.

Davis wins re-election for coroner

Newton County voters have spoken, and Tommy Davis has been elected as coroner once again. Republican Davis had 21,675 votes to Democrat Robert L. Bradley's 19,589.

"I look forward to serving four more years for the citizens of Newton County," Davis said at the Board of Elections. "It is an honor to serve as their county coroner. The trust and confidence they put in me will increase my dedication and commitment to them and the job I do."
