The only judge to be challenged this year, incumbent Judge John Ott faced opposition from Covington lawyer Stephanie Lindsey, best known for representing Alcovy High School Principal LaQuanda Carpenter in the recent school blogging lawsuit. However, Ott took the primary with 8,731votes.

BOE District 5 Winner: Abigail Morgan-Coggin

Abigail Morgan-Coggin's son Shaw had a request for his mother. If she won the election for the District 5 seat for the Newton County Board of Education, he wanted every Friday to be pizza Friday at school and for the day after Halloween to be declared a school holiday. With her win Tuesday night, she'll be able to take his requests before the rest of the board when she takes office in January.

BOE District 3 Winner: Shakila Henderson-Baker

It was an emotional week for Shakila Henderson-Baker. Although she won the seat for District 3 Newton County Board of Education on Tuesday, she lost her biggest supporter, her father. Henderson-Baker, a Democrat, ran a tight race against Republican Kevin Wade, with Henderson-Baker receiving 4,667 votes and Wade 3,321.

Nathan Deal visits Newton County

When asked to simplify Georgia's gubernatorial race, Republican Nathan Deal said he's the best candidate because of his extensive legal and political background and his conservative promise to not increase residents' tax burden.

Deal spoke for 15 minutes to a small group of prominent local Republicans at a lunch event Friday at Smiley's Restaurant in Porterdale. The event was hosted by a local committee supporting Deal for governor.
