District 5 Republican board of commissioner candidates Ronnie Dimsdale, Wesley Dowdy, Levie A. Maddox and Jared Rutberg fielded questions Thursday about a proposed civic center, rails to trails and T-SPLOST at a Newton County GOP forum.
Leaders must focus on retaining and attracting businesses to the county while managing growth in a way that maintains Newton's character, candidates for office in Covington and Porterdale said at a forum Tuesday.
"It feels great, just to know the race is over and behind me. I want to thank God first, then I want to thank the three ladies in my life, my wife, mother and my sister. I couldn't do it without them," Sims said in a phone interview following the election. "I also want to thank Rickie Corley for being a standup guy and running a clean race."
Abigail Morgan-Coggin's son Shaw had a request for his mother. If she won the election for the District 5 seat for the Newton County Board of Education, he wanted every Friday to be pizza Friday at school and for the day after Halloween to be declared a school holiday. With her win Tuesday night, she'll be able to take his requests before the rest of the board when she takes office in January.
It was an emotional week for Shakila Henderson-Baker. Although she won the seat for District 3 Newton County Board of Education on Tuesday, she lost her biggest supporter, her father. Henderson-Baker, a Democrat, ran a tight race against Republican Kevin Wade, with Henderson-Baker receiving 4,667 votes and Wade 3,321.
When asked to simplify Georgia's gubernatorial race, Republican Nathan Deal said he's the best candidate because of his extensive legal and political background and his conservative promise to not increase residents' tax burden.
Deal spoke for 15 minutes to a small group of prominent local Republicans at a lunch event Friday at Smiley's Restaurant in Porterdale. The event was hosted by a local committee supporting Deal for governor.
Tuesday's unofficial runoff returns have determined the party candidates competing in the Nov. 2 general elections. A final tally of ballots will be confirmed at a later date. Results from the races concerning Newton County are as follows as of press time:
