GPC shows slight enrollment increase

Georgia Perimeter College's fall 2014 student enrollment showed a 1.2 percent increase over fall 2013, with 21,371 students signing up for classes. The increase reverses a two-year trend that also has been experienced by other institutions of higher education.

School board approves 2009-10 calendar

The Newton County Board of Education approved the 2009?2010 school calendar at the December 9, 2008, combined work session/monthly meeting. The school district will continue to use a balanced calendar in 2009?2010.

Theme school planned by NCSS

Newton County students in elementary and middle school will now have a theme school option beginning next year. The Board of Education approved during its Dec. 9 meeting Superintendent R. Steven Whatley's recommendations for the creation of two new theme schools.

"The recommendation to the board is that an elementary and middle theme school be established and that the elementary and middle school attendance zones and sites be set for 2009-2010..." Whatley said.

BOE mulls name for new school

Newton County's newest elementary school will officially get a name next month. BOE members are pouring over seven pages of suggested names for elementary school No. 14, which is located on Kirkland Road and will make their final decision at the Jan. 20 meeting.

"We would ask that board members narrow their selection from this list and others to six names and on the 20th, the board will take action in naming the new elementary school," said Superintendent R. Steven Whatley.

NCSS has 100 percent participation in Relay for Life

At the Nov. 11 Board of Education work session, Newton County School Superintendent Dr. Steve Whatley accepted an award on behalf of the school district from Brian Burgoyne of the Newton County Relay for Life program for having 100 percent school participation in the 2008 Relay for Life Program.

Each school in the district participated in the 2008 Relay for Life and overall, Newton County Schools raised approximately $106,000 in the fight against cancer.
