Kindergarten roundup dates announced

Newton County School System will hold its annual Kindergarten Round?Up during the week of March 9 -12. Children must be 5-years-old by September 1 (child must have been born on or before September 1, 2004) to register for the 2008?2009 school year. Parents should bring the prospective kindergarten student with them to the roundup so teachers can conduct screenings with the children. How to spell C-H-A-M-P-I-O-N

The hush among the crowd parents, teachers and well-wishers was deafening as middle school students Jeremy Walton and Gaby Collantes stood side by side on the stage of Eastside High School to battle it out for the title of countywide spelling bee champion. After correctly spelling both "nubby" – which Walton misspelled – and "orchid," Collantes, a Veterans Memorial seventh grader, nabbed the title of Newton County spelling bee champion.

Registration Open For April 4 ACT Test

The next ACT achievement test will be administered on April 4. Students who wish to take the college admission and placement exam must register by Feb. 27. Late registration deadline is available Feb. 28 - March 13 for an extra fee. Students may register online at www.actstudent.org, or pick up registration forms from high school counseling offices.

Newton County's newest elementary school officially has a name - Live Oak Elementary School. The Newton County Board of Education approved Jan. 20 the measure to name elementary school No. 14, which is located on Kirkland Road.
