West Newton Elementary School removed from state focus school list

The Georgia Department of Education announced on Dec. 18 that West Newton Elementary School has been removed from the list of State Focus Schools after successfully decreasing the number of students not proficient by 18 percent. Overall, 38 schools were named from either the Priority or Focus Schools lists.

Eastside High School named 2008 Georgia School of Excellence

How to spell C-H-A-M-P-I-O-N

The hush among the crowd parents, teachers and well-wishers was deafening as middle school students Jeremy Walton and Gaby Collantes stood side by side on the stage of Eastside High School to battle it out for the title of countywide spelling bee champion. After correctly spelling both "nubby" – which Walton misspelled – and "orchid," Collantes, a Veterans Memorial seventh grader, nabbed the title of Newton County spelling bee champion.

Registration Open For April 4 ACT Test

The next ACT achievement test will be administered on April 4. Students who wish to take the college admission and placement exam must register by Feb. 27. Late registration deadline is available Feb. 28 - March 13 for an extra fee. Students may register online at www.actstudent.org, or pick up registration forms from high school counseling offices.

New elementary school named

Newton County's newest elementary school officially has a name - Live Oak Elementary School. The Newton County Board of Education approved Jan. 20 the measure to name elementary school No. 14, which is located on Kirkland Road.

Newton County Board of Education Chairman Almond Turner and new councilmember Eddie Johnson were sworn in at the board's Jan. 13 meeting.

Turner, who has been a member of the board since 2000, ran unopposed in last year's general election for the Dist. 4 seat. Johnson, a former NCSS bus driver and phone company manager, defeated 12-year veteran Rickie Corley for the Dist. 2 seat in the Nov. 4 election.

Middle Ridge and West Newton Receive Lowe’s Toolbox for Education Grants

Teachers at Middle Ridge and West Newton Elementary Schools were recently awarded grants valued at $5,000 each from Lowe's Toolbox for Education Grants program. The grants provide funds for projects to be developed by the schools with help from their PTO's and other community volunteers, including Store Manager Kevin Cole and employees from the Lowe's Home Improvement Store in Conyers.
