West Newton Elementary School removed from state focus school list

The Georgia Department of Education announced on Dec. 18 that West Newton Elementary School has been removed from the list of State Focus Schools after successfully decreasing the number of students not proficient by 18 percent. Overall, 38 schools were named from either the Priority or Focus Schools lists.

Newton County School System selected to received prestigious HP Innovations in Education grant

Newton County School System was selected as one of the 25 school systems in the United States to receive a highly competitive 2009 HP Innovations in Education grant. Targeted at school systems serving students in grades six through 12, the grant program is designed to help educators address the need for raising student achievement in math and science and increase student awareness in high-tech college and career opportunities.

Eastside High School’s class of 2009 offered over $8 million in scholarships

To date, 66 out of 282 seniors have been offered 146 scholarships totaling $8,375,800. A total of 58 different colleges and universities from 16 different states and the District of Columbia contributed to this year's class total. Presently, this outstanding class has accepted music, military and merit-based offers. This does not include the HOPE scholarship, which is calculated separately. The class total also includes 45 local scholarships donated through 34 different organizations totaling over $186,000.

Piedmont Academy holds honors day

 Piedmont Academy held its year-end honor's day program on Thursday, May 14.
 Dr. Michael Rossi opened the assembly and thanked those in attendance as well as the students being recognized in the program.
 Lee Aldhizer with the Georgia Military College EXCEL joint enrollment program presented and stated that several students had earned 33 college credits by taking English 101, 102, World Literature, and Biology.

Newton High School’s Class of 2009 offered more than $5.7 million in scholarships

To date, 52 out of 354 seniors have been offered 115 scholarships totaling $5,704,824. There were a number of different colleges and universities from across the nation that contributed to this year's class total. This includes all types of scholarships, such as academic, sports, military, music, band and merit-based offers. The class total includes 39 local scholarships donated through 22 different organizations totaling $110,450.

To date, 50 out of approximately 300 seniors have been offered 69 scholarships totaling $2,148,543. A total of 18 different colleges and universities from nine states contributed to this year's class total. Presently, they have accepted $1,978,343 of that amount. This includes all types of scholarships, such as academic, athletic, military and merit-based offers. This does not include the HOPE scholarship, which is calculated separately. The class total also includes 31 local scholarships donated through 21 different organizations totaling over $32,000.

Newton County school release 2009 Georgia High School Graduation Test results

Newton County School System (NCSS) students matched or outperformed their statewide peers on the 2009 Georgia High School Graduation Test (GHSGT). As a result, the district's pass percentage rate increased in every category of the test in 2009, with the greatest gains in science and social studies, where the district pass percentage rates increased by three points, going from 86 percent in 2008 to 89 percent for both subjects in 2009.
