The Newton County School System has failed Adequate Yearly Progress for the 2008-2009 school year according to reports released by the Georgia Department of Education.

In a preliminary report of Adequate Yearly Progress, seven of 21 Newton County Schools failed to meet standards set by the state. Failing schools are Ficquett Elementary, Livingston Elementary, Middle Ridge Elementary, Clements Middle, Cousins Middle, Indian Creek Middle and Challenge Charter Academy.

Local teacher participates in Institute for Environmental Education

The 2009 Oxford Institute for Environmental Education (OIEE) concluded was held at the Oxhouse Science Center, science field station of Oxford College. Newton dual enrollment students stage mock trial

Students enrolled in the Criminal Justice class at Newton High School conducted a mock trial as part of their final assignment. The students in this class are part of the Dual Enrollment program offered by DeKalb Technical College to high school students in Newton County.

The students prepared and presented witnesses and arguments supporting both the case for the prosecution and that for the defense. DeKalb Tech offered dual enrollment courses in Criminal Justice Fundamentals, Homeland Security and Certified Nursing Assistant at Newton County High School during the 2008-09 school year.
