Newton County School System receives $283,447 Caring Communities System of Care Grant

The Governor's Office for Children and Families has awarded the Newton County School System a 2009 Caring Communities System of Care grant in the amount of $283,447. The Newton County School System was one of only ten recipients in the state to receive a Caring Communities grant award. Grace Baptist Church in Covington recently made a generous donation of much needed school supplies to students at Porterdale Elementary School. NCSS announces winners of bus safety poster contest

Newton County School System (NCSS) is pleased to announce that Brian Lopez and Hannah Hinton are the winners of the district's annual School Bus Safety Poster Contest! The theme of this year's contest was "Cross in View, it's the Right Thing to Do!" According to NCSS Assistant Transportation Director Randall Luna, their posters will now represent Newton County Schools in the Georgia competition.

Keeping the faith

"I never lost my faith," said Andre Kessler to a large group of Newton High School freshman. "I am still an observant and very proud Jew."

And although his faith is still strong, it certainly has been tested in the past. Kessler, who was born in Bucharest, Romania, in 1940, is a survivor of the Holocaust, the systematic extermination of approximately six million Jews.

Newton County schools announce fall schedule for students

All Newton County public schools will be closed on Friday, October 9 for a studentholiday/teacher furlough day. The following week, October 12-16, schools will be closed for fall Break. The Newton County School System central office located on Newton Drive will be open during the hours of 8 a.m. until 4 p.m.

Local receives UGA scholarship

 Emily Lucille Wyatt has been selected to receive the Southern States Cooperative Scholarship awarded by the University of Georgia College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences for the 2009-2010 academic year. Each year the College of Agricultural and Environmental Sciences awards approximately $100,000 in scholarships to students studying in any of its 24 majors.

Eastside and Newton High Schools awarded Georgia Work Ready training grants

Newton County School System is pleased to announce that both Eastside High School and Newton High School have each been awarded $5,000 Georgia Work Ready training grants. They are two of only 56 high schools in the state to receive the grant that will provide three-year access to skills-gap training software to help students improve their Work Ready Certificate levels. The funding was made available through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Three Newton County Schools and the District Make AYP After CRCT Summer Retests

After tabulating the scores from summer retests the Newton County School district as a whole and has passed Adequate Yearly Progress for the 2008-2009 school year.

Students were able to take the Criterion Referenced Competency Tests again during the summer break and the Georgia Department of Education announced the results Thursday.
