The Newton County Board of Education is one step closer to finding a new school superintendent to replace Dr. Steve Whatley, who earlier this school year announced his retirement effective June 30, 2010. In the fall, when the 2009 session of the Stock Market Game started on September 28, the Dow stood at 9,789. When trading ended on December 4, the Dow had climbed to 10,389. Spelling bee queens

The tension was thick as the two girls volleyed back and forth on the stage of Eastside High School in front of an auditorium of parents, educators and well-wishers Friday morning. In the end, Indian Creek Middle School seventh-grader Caitlin Smith beat out Palmer-Stone fifth-grader Coley Edwards by correctly spelling indiscreet, successfully nabbing the title of Newton County spelling bee champion.
