Kindergarten Round-Up dates announced for March

Newton County School System will hold its annual Kindergarten Round-Up during the week of March 15 through March 18. Children must be 5 years old by Sept. 1, 2010 (child must have been born on or before Sept. 1, 2005) to register for the 2010?2011 school year. Parents should bring the prospective kindergarten student with them to the roundup so teachers can conduct screenings with the children.

Beautiful Hearts: DeKalb Tech cosmetology students give needy residents free makeovers

 After losing her job and being evicted from her apartment, Sabrina Ortiz now calls The Garden of Gethsemane Homeless Shelter in Covington her home. As part of a DeKalb Technical College cosmetology department project called "From Our Hearts to Yours" she recently received an eyebrow wax, a facial, hair styling and color as well as a manicure and pedicure.

Kiwanis honors STAR students, teachers

Although school is out this week for mid-winter break, three high school students were honored at Covington Kiwanis Club luncheon for their stellar school performances.

The STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) program was created in 1958 by the Professional Association of Georgia Educators and is sponsored on a local level by organizations such as Kiwanis.
