AHS hosts fall festival

Alcovy High School will stage a community fall festival from 5 p.m. tol 9 p.m. on Friday.

Visiting speakers: On Nov. 3, guidance counselor Kelli Fain arranged for 17 colleges to speak with high school junior and senior students along with their parents about their college or university. Upperclassmen were able to inquire about admission requirements, programs of study, campus life, semester fees, athletics, deadlines, financial aid, scholarships and any other question that came to their mind. The students found the fair to be extremely helpful and arranged several tours to the various schools.

Graduation rate surpasses state average

The Newton County School System continues to surpass Georgia's average graduation rate, with 84.2 percent of county seniors graduating in 2010, compared to 80.8 percent of seniors statewide, according to information released on Tuesday. Newton County has also continued to post yearly increases in its graduation rate for all students.

Trip on the Tribulation Trail

Piedmont Academy's Fellowship of Christian Athletes attended "Tribulation Trail" in Stockbridge on Oct. 15. The dramatic, biblical presentation began in 1992 and is sponsored by several community churches in the area. The group walked through tiki-lantern lit paths through the woods to experience journeys based on the Bible's book of Revelations.

NCSS saved over $9 million with QSCB program

The Newton County Board of Education will save $9.7 million over several years and get a rebate every six months through its participation in the Qualified School Construction Bond Program, part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

"We estimate had you sold regular tax exempt bonds your interest cost would have been $9.7 million over the life of the bonds," said Bryce W. Holcomb Jr., director of the public finance department of Citigroup in Atlanta.

Nick Collins resigns from NCSS

Nick Collins, the former head football coach for Newton High School, has resigned from the school system. The Newton County Board of Education voted to accept his resignation at Tuesday's meeting.

Collins was involved in an incident in August involving Felicia Jackson, the president of the team's booster club, and her juvenile son, a player on the team.
