Principals named at four schools
Members of the Newton County Board of Education agreed unanimously to hire four new principals for the recently vacated positions at Alcovy and Eastside High Schools, Veterans Memorial Middle School and Middle Ridge Elementary School.
Centralized registration for 2009-2010
Newton County School System will hold centralized registration for the 2009-2010 school year beginning July 1 , Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Clements Theme School, located at 66 Jack Neely Road. Signs will be posted. Documents needed for student enrollment are as follows:

The students in this class are part of the Dual Enrollment program offered by DeKalb Technical College to high school students in Newton County. Alcovy High School principal David Easterday has announced his retirement effective July 1 and Eastside High School principal Dr. Robert Daria has announced that he will resign his position effective July 1 as well.

Oxford home-schooled student Flannery Peay earned a silver medallion for scoring 93 to 99 percent on the 19th annual National Mythology Exam. The 6th grader joined over 10,000 students in grades 3-9 from the United States, Canada and Australia in completing the test which is sponsored by the American Classical league's standing committee. Flannery is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Austin Peay.
Theme schools adopt student dress codes
Rules and dress code requirements for the new theme schools at Fairview Elementary and Clements Middle schools were approved unanimously by all board members present at Tuesday night's work session for the Newton County Board of Education, allowing principals to distribute the strict parent contract and dress code for the 2009-2010 school year to parents.
Oxford College Institute continues to shape environmental education
2009 Oxford Institute for Environmental Education (OIEE) began today at Oxhouse Science Center, science field station of Oxford College. Founded in 1992, OIEE provides an opportunity for science teachers in grades K-12 to collaborate with college biology faculty, gaining new science teaching methods and investigative techniques.

Newton High School students Adam Graham, John Parker and DeOndre Robinson won several awards at the CTI State Leadership Conference held April 29-May 2 at Jekyll Island. Oxford Dean creates scholarship fund
Stephen Bowen, dean of Oxford College of Emory University, and his wife, Nancy, have pledged $100,000 to create a new endowed scholarship fund at Oxford. The Bowen Scholarship will provide need-based aid to sophomore students.
The house that Kenny built
Small house, big prize: The Covington Woman's Club would like to congratulate Alcovy High School student Kenny Leathers on winning first place in woodworking at the Career Center Instruction conference at Jekyll Island April 30 - May 2.
