Fairview to host literacy picnic event

Come celebrate literacy Friday, Oct. 29, on The Square in Covington. Fairview Theme School will be hosting a literacy picnic for students and their families. Bring a picnic dinner, a blanket or chairs, a book to read and wear your Fairview T-shirts. Picnic hours will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Mollie Melvin, from the Learning Center, will speak about literacy and the importance of reading. There will also be a special guest reader.

Junior firefighters: To prepare for "Fire Prevention Week" during the week of Oct. 3-9, Piedmont Academy students in pre-school and kindergarten had a special visit by the Jasper County Fire Department on Tuesday. The firefighter explained the importance of having a family fire safety plan, what to do if their home were to catch on fire and who to call, as well as "stop, drop and roll."
