Fairview to host literacy picnic event

Come celebrate literacy Friday, Oct. 29, on The Square in Covington. Fairview Theme School will be hosting a literacy picnic for students and their families. Bring a picnic dinner, a blanket or chairs, a book to read and wear your Fairview T-shirts. Picnic hours will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Mollie Melvin, from the Learning Center, will speak about literacy and the importance of reading. There will also be a special guest reader.

Junior firefighters: To prepare for "Fire Prevention Week" during the week of Oct. 3-9, Piedmont Academy students in pre-school and kindergarten had a special visit by the Jasper County Fire Department on Tuesday. The firefighter explained the importance of having a family fire safety plan, what to do if their home were to catch on fire and who to call, as well as "stop, drop and roll." "New Orleans - Before and After Katrina" will be the focus of the annual Fall Symposium at Georgia Perimeter College Newton Campus. Stocking the banks

Learning valuable skills: Members of Newton High School DECA collected canned goods outside of Kroger in Conyers Sept. 29, to replenish the local food banks and collected monetary donations in support of Georgia DECA Statewide Fall Community Service Project, Breast Cancer Research. Both organizations collected over 75 cans for the food banks and $165 towards The Breast Cancer Foundation. The group is lead by Quinita Morrow and Ken Ondracek.

Ga. Perimeter College to host Culture of New Orleans event

The culture of New Orleans will be celebrated in a three-day symposium that begins Monday at Georgia Perimeter College Newton Campus.

The free event will feature film screenings, a jazz concert, food, panel discussions and speeches.
