Testing presentation highlights Board of Education meeting

The Newton County Board of Education has recently requested permission from the Georgia Department of Education to use the Iowa Assessments from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt rather than the Georgia Milestones Assessment System. Board of Education approves contract extension for Superintendent Fuhrey

The Newton County Board of Education extended Superintendent Samantha Fuhrey's contract for an additional year. By unanimous vote, school board members approved her contract extension at the July 19 meeting. As a result of this extension, Fuhrey's contract now runs through the completion of the 2018-2019 school year. This is the third contract extension Fuhrey has received since the board selected her as superintendent in 2013. She was initially offered a three-year contract before assuming the duties as school superintendent on July 1, 2013.

NCSS Receives a 4-Star Financial Efficiency Rating

Newton County School System (NCSS) received a 4-Star Financial Efficiency Rating from the Georgia Department of Education (GaDOE). This is the first year the state released Financial Efficiency Star Ratings for school districts. According to the GaDOE, the ratings are based on data from the 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2014-15 academic years.

Most Newton County schools earn average, above average number of stars

The Georgia Department of Education today released the 2015 School Climate Star Ratings for all schools in the Newton County School System. The ratings survey students', teachers' and parents' perceptions of the school's climate during the 2014-2015 school year. Included in the final calculations are data from the Georgia Student Health Survey 2.0, Georgia School Personnel Survey, and Georgia Parent Survey, as well as student discipline data and attendance records for students, teachers, staff and administrators.

Newton High School students named Gates Millennium Scholars

Newton High School (NHS) seniors Tony Collins and Joshua Suber are among the 89 Georgia students named 2016 Gates Millennium scholars. The NHS students, like fellow Newton County School system students, Tyrik Grant of Alcovy High School and Jesse Eldell of Eastside High School, will receive a good-through-graduation, full-ride scholarships to use at any accredited college or university in the country.
