Parents of elementary school students have been wondering how proposed rezoning of Newton County elementary schools will affect their students. School system officials have released the boundary descriptions to let them know just that. Here are the proposed boundaries:
Projected revenue losses for next year have the Newton County School System looking to trim $4.6 million to $9 million from its 2011-2012 budget, according to a release from Superintendent Gary Mathews.
Enrollment for Newton County schools has gone up by 322 from this time last year, but according to the Georgia Department of Education, 1,101 more students are eligible to receive free or reduced lunches.
Scavenger hunt: Kim Waters, a Joint Enrollment student at GPC Newton and Lenzie Rutledge, Eastside High senior, awarded prizes to students who attended the kick off at Sharp Stadium as part of the 2010 Georgia Apply to College Week. Eastside is the first Newton County school to participate in the program.
The Newton County Board of Education discussed the rezoning of the county's elementary schools at Tuesday's meeting. All schools will be affected in some way, though not all students will necessarily change schools.
