Students and parents should look for revisions in the student handbook as the Newton County Board of Education approved changes to the student manual at its meeting Tuesday.
NCSS students take home awards from state science fair
Newton County students fared well at the recent Georgia Science and Engineer Fair as 11 middle and high school students brought home awards. Ten of the student won either third or fourth place honors while one student won a special award for his project.
EHS FBLA Team headed to nationals
Members of Eastside High School's FBLA team won big at the recent FBLA State Leadership Conference in Atlanta, and are now headed to the national competition in Anaheim, CA. this summer. Team members Cason Cantrell, Alana Freeman and Conner Haler all won first place in their competitions and Dustin Gentis took home second place in his event. All first and second place winners are eligible for the national competition.
NCSS releases supt. survey results
As part of the ongoing superintendent search process the Newton County Board of Education asked members of the public to weigh in via an online survey on what qualifications and characteristics the next superintendent should have.
CRCT Testing Begins Next Week
The Georgia Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests (CRCT) will be administered to all students in grades three through eight, the weeks of April 16-26, 2013. Actual tests and dates are:
Superintendent finalists announced
The Newton County Board of Education named its top three finalists for the system's superintendent position, including a current administrator in the Newton County School System, a superintendent from Illinois and a deputy superintendent from Athens.
NCSS honors media specialist
Oak Hill Elementary School media specialist Kimberly Ramsey was named Newton County School System's 2013 Media Specialist of the Year.
Montessori to offer high school classes
Enrollment is now open for the 2013-2014 school year at the Montessori School of Covington, and high school students will now have the opportunity to attend the school as long as they're enrolled in the Georgia Cyber Academy program.
Oak Hill Media Specialist wins top award
Oak Hill Elementary School Media Specialist Kimberly Ramsey is Newton County School System's 2013 Media Specialist of the Year. Ramsey will now represent Newton County Schools in the South Metro District Library Media Specialist of the Year competition, part of the Georgia Library Media Specialist of the Year program.

Newton County School System announces school level CRCT results
Newton County School System has received school level results on the 2009 Criterion Referenced Competency Tests for the district's elementary and middle schools. The CRCT is designed to measure how well students acquire the skills and knowledge described in the Georgia Performance Standards (GPS) and the Quality Core Curriculum (QCC).

Newton dual enrollment students stage mock trial
Students enrolled in the Criminal Justice class at Newton High School conducted a mock trial as part of their final assignment. The students in this class are part of the Dual Enrollment program offered by DeKalb Technical College to high school students in Newton County. Two principals leave high schools
Alcovy High School principal David Easterday has announced his retirement effective July 1 and Eastside High School principal Dr. Robert Daria has announced that he will resign his position effective July 1 as well.

Oxford home-schooled student Flannery Peay earned a silver medallion for scoring 93 to 99 percent on the 19th annual National Mythology Exam. The 6th grader joined over 10,000 students in grades 3-9 from the United States, Canada and Australia in completing the test which is sponsored by the American Classical league's standing committee. Flannery is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Austin Peay.
Theme schools adopt student dress codes
Rules and dress code requirements for the new theme schools at Fairview Elementary and Clements Middle schools were approved unanimously by all board members present at Tuesday night's work session for the Newton County Board of Education, allowing principals to distribute the strict parent contract and dress code for the 2009-2010 school year to parents.

Newton High School students Adam Graham, John Parker and DeOndre Robinson won several awards at the CTI State Leadership Conference held April 29-May 2 at Jekyll Island.
