Newton High teacher honored

Kristina Collins of Newton High School has earned the Mary Frazier Equity and Excellence Award from the Georgia Association for Gifted Children.

This award is in honor of Mary Frazier (1938-2005), late past president of National Association for Gifted Children and pioneer for changed laws and procedures that has tripled the inclusion of African-American and quadrupled Hispanic student identification for the gifted program for the state of Georgia alone. Kristina Collins is the third person to ever receive this award, according to a release.

Lessons from the community: Representatives from different helping professions have visited Mansfield Elementary School's pre-k classes recently as part of lessons on community helpers.

Helping hands.

Mansfield Elementary Pre-k classes have been learning about community helpers. They have had different community helpers including: a nurse, a dental hygienist, a K-9 deputy from Newton County Sheriff's Office, and a lineman from Snapping Shoals. On Monday, April 11, Bobby Fincher of Snapping Shoals came to the school and demonstrated the work of a lineman. He discussed the storm and power outages that took place last week. He demonstrated how the bucket truck operates and discussed how linemen help to restore power to the community.

2007 Eastside High School graduate Caroline Dickey has been inducted into the Alpha Chapter, Phi Beta Kappa at the University of Georgia. She is the daughter of Joyce and Chan Dickey of Covington and has a major in psychology.

Fifth grade writing test scores improve

Newton County fifth graders have increased their writing test scores by six points this year, and 11 schools have at least a 3 percent gain in scores.

Florida State University announces the graduation of Whitney Rebecca Hays, Molly, with a degree of Juris Doctor. She is a graduate of Eastside High School, Emory of Oxford and Emory University. She is the daughter of Ed and Gay Ree Hays, granddaughter of Mary J. Hays and niece of Vicki Hays, all of Mansfield.

Pizza for a cause today at Stevi B's

The Alcovy High School Latin Club is currently waiting tables at Stevi B's pizza on U.S. Highway 278 to raise money for a 2013 trip to Rome. Members will be there until 4 p.m. today. South Salem pre-k students spend the day with Dad

Pre-k students at South Salem Elementary celebrated their fathers with Play-a-Day-Away with Dad which was held April 22. Students invited their dads, granddads, uncles and special men in their lives to play the day away at the Liberty field. The students played kickball, baseball, football, and even beat the Dads in a game of Tug-o-War! There were 31 out of 40 students families represented.
