Volunteerism can help young people grow into well-rounded, responsible individuals. When volunteering, kids can learn new skills, foster new friendships and contacts, and improve both their social and interpersonal skills. Piedmont Academy welcomes new students

The 2014-2015 school year opened at Piedmont Academy Monday, August 11, and 39 new students walked the halls for the first time, bringing the school's total enrollment to 295. There are 108 students in grades K4 through fifth, 69 students in middle school and 118 students in high school.

State releases district-level EOCT scores

District-level scores were released by the Georgia Department of Education (GADOE) for 2014 End-of-Course Tests (EOCT), showing Newton County School System (NCSS) students outpaced the state pass rate on six out of eight tests and improved pass rates on five of six tests from last year.

Centralized registration for 2009-2010

Newton County School System will hold centralized registration for the 2009-2010 school year beginning July 1 , Monday through Thursday, from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. at Clements Theme School, located at 66 Jack Neely Road. Signs will be posted. Documents needed for student enrollment are as follows:

Newton dual enrollment students stage mock trial

Students enrolled in the Criminal Justice class at Newton High School conducted a mock trial as part of their final assignment. The students in this class are part of the Dual Enrollment program offered by DeKalb Technical College to high school students in Newton County.

The students prepared and presented witnesses and arguments supporting both the case for the prosecution and that for the defense. DeKalb Tech offered dual enrollment courses in Criminal Justice Fundamentals, Homeland Security and Certified Nursing Assistant at Newton County High School during the 2008-09 school year.

Home School/out of state high school news

Oxford home-schooled student Flannery Peay earned a silver medallion for scoring 93 to 99 percent on the 19th annual National Mythology Exam. The 6th grader joined over 10,000 students in grades 3-9 from the United States, Canada and Australia in completing the test which is sponsored by the American Classical league's standing committee. Flannery is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Austin Peay.

Theme schools adopt student dress codes

Rules and dress code requirements for the new theme schools at Fairview Elementary and Clements Middle schools were approved unanimously by all board members present at Tuesday night's work session for the Newton County Board of Education, allowing principals to distribute the strict parent contract and dress code for the 2009-2010 school year to parents.

Oxford College Institute continues to shape environmental education

2009 Oxford Institute for Environmental Education (OIEE) began today at Oxhouse Science Center, science field station of Oxford College. Founded in 1992, OIEE provides an opportunity for science teachers in grades K-12 to collaborate with college biology faculty, gaining new science teaching methods and investigative techniques.

NHS students attend state leadership conference at Jekyll Island

Newton High School students Adam Graham, John Parker and DeOndre Robinson won several awards at the CTI State Leadership Conference held April 29-May 2 at Jekyll Island.

John Parker competed against 13 students from across the state to place second in public speaking. The judge's score for him was 95, 93 and 92 out of a possible 100. According to his teacher, John was confident that he would place in the top three and excited when his name was called to come to the stage and accept his trophy.

Oxford Dean creates scholarship fund

Stephen Bowen, dean of Oxford College of Emory University, and his wife, Nancy, have pledged $100,000 to create a new endowed scholarship fund at Oxford. The Bowen Scholarship will provide need-based aid to sophomore students.
